My favourite response to “I’d never date a disabled person” is “you probably already have” and watch them get all flustered. 😂

I have an autoimmune condition. One day I was limping around. A local gardener saw me and asked me what happened to me. I explained. A pretty long explanation. He listened and summarized "that's essentially a long term disability". I paused for a few seconds and said "that's correct". I paused because I never thought about it that way and no medical professionals described me as such. But day in and day out, the nature of the experience is very similar.

My husband went from able bodied to disabled after he was almost unalived. He was in life support and we almost lost him. Some people would be stunned by the comments I get. Like basically high fiving me for staying with him through all this ……. Like. I do not get it. That’s how vows work

My ex was with me "for the money" and left when he finally realized that my inheritance is just enough for me to survive on (afford my meds etc.) When he dumped me after years of screaming at me and calling me useless for "not contributing and being a burden" he actually said he stayed 4yrs after he decided to leave because he "didn't want to be seen as the guy that abandoned his disabled wife"! Like I'm a helpless puppy or some shite!

I was told during my SNAP interview that I should break up with my partner because they were disabled and unemployed. Simultaneously in the next cubicle the worker who was interviewing my partner for SNAP said she should have children. My partner replied that they can't due to disability and they said but you can get more SNAP. As far as I know he was fired so quickly his name was removed from our case. Likely due to my worker. Being disabled is not fun and as soon as they find out we both have invisible disabilities they decide we must be faking either one or both.

I remember my little cousin saying unpropted that she wouldnt care if her partner was in a wheel chair because why should it matter and then proceeded to say but she wouldnt date someone with a beard because it scratch her face - the mind of a 8 year old everyone

It’s actually insane that people actually have the nerve to say those things

If someone said that they wouldn't date a disabled person, I'd be telling them that no disabled person was asking, we had a meeting about you months ago and no one wanted you even the 40 year old virgin.

On average it costs an extra £600-£800 a month to live as a disabled person.

A great response to, “I wouldn’t date a disabled person!”

“No, but (Partner’s name) would.”

My partner has several visible & invisible disabilities (I'm also disabled, but my disability is invisible and I'm currently able to work full time & live alone, so a lot of people disregard it even if they know), and it gets SO exasperating when people act like she's somehow lucky to have me or like I'm somehow "above" her in the relationship. If anything I'm lucky to have her!!

One of my favorite responses to people like this is the fact that I met my boyfriend BECAUSE of my disability. We were at a college intensive and he was talking to someone in the dining area about his friend back home who passed out due to a medical condition, and how he wanted to know more about it so he could help but didn’t know how to ask. I was at a nearby table and overheard, and without even thinking about it I turned around and went “oh I have that!!” and held up my crutches.
Our 1 year anniversary was in February :)

I do joke with my family about letting them push my wheelchair so they get free caretaker’s admissions but I think that’s something only a disabled person should be able to joke about ! Similarly my mother has a disabled parking pass for her own physical disabilities and once it expired when she wasn’t able to get it renewed and the entire time we were complaining about how convenient it was—as disabled people, we’re allowed to have our fun with the “perks” of disability, but only people who are invited can join us in the banter!
