Never Say These Things!

10 Things You Should Never Say to Anyone - Matthew Kelly - 60 Second Wisdom

Video Transcript:

“There are some things that we should simply never say. Some because they will accomplish the exact opposite of what you are hoping to accomplish. Nobody ever calmed down after being told to calm down in the midst of a disagreement, for example. Other things are better off not said because they are rude or obnoxious. And finally, some things are just none of our business.
Here are 9 things to delete permanently from your vocabulary:

1. Relax.

2. Everything will be okay.

3. I told you so.

4. This should be easy.

5. Get over it.

6. Are you really going to eat that?

7. You’re insane.

8. Why are you still single.

9. You look tired.

10. (And of course) Calm down.

Maurice Switzer observed, “It is better to remain silent at the risk of being thought a fool, than to talk and remove all doubt of it.” Just because there is an awkward silence doesn’t mean you have to fill it."

Oh my gosh, this video made me laugh. All of these are so true. And I just love "Just because there is an awkward silence doesn't mean you have to fill it."

More people need to hear this message. You are spot on! What a fabulous (and gentle) reminder.

Especially the "get over it". I never get when people tell others that.

Thank you Matthew - I don't need to fill an akward silence - Great advice.

I think it's fine to say "Everything will be OK, " especially to comfort a child, for example.

Matthew you are as a best friend to so many of us - a great encourager, always keeping it real and relevant, a dear, wise brother in the Lord. You, be been/remain as a great blessing in my life- and that grace spills over to the benefit of all whom I love, encounter or serve. Our Abba, Great Wisdom, chose well when He called to your heart, “Come, follow me.” I thank God that you chose to respond: “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.” Thank you for being a light of Christ, Matthew.

My mom said “get over it” to me after I told her of being sexually abused. (She was a victim herself). Took a long time, but thanks be to God for understanding and healing. Love your list.

Thanks for the reminder and the laugh as my father often paraphrased the words of Maurice Switzer. Sound advice!

As you already replied about some of the others, context is very important. "Never" is a very strong word.

To this great list I would add the following things that well-meaning people often say in an attempt to fix the feelings of someone who is hurting but instead have the opposite effect:
"Don't let it bother you."
"It's all part of God's plan."

"Everything will be okay." This phrase has always gotten under my skin. Things will not always be okay. I appreciate your insights here on these generalized comments. Thanks, Matthew!

Amusing since we have all heard or used these.

Instead of thinking “it’s ok” or “I’m ok”, I try to remember that the storm I’m currently in will pass, nothing lasts, get a good gratitude practice going and you will be ok. Great video Matthew. Thanks 🙏

That awkward silence… it’s a real thing, and often it’s there for a purpose.

Matthew, these are just spot on, though I admit that I still use some of them. Thanks for sharing this!

Agree...mostly. Number 2 specifically, depends on the circumstance and how it is said. "Everything will be okay", is it not a derivative from God himself stating "Do not be afraid"? I think used in a comforting manner, "everything will be okay", is both accurate and helpful.
