China's military says 'prepared for battle' in drills video as Taiwan spots carrier | ABS-CBN News

China's military on Sunday (October 13) put out a propaganda video on its social media accounts showing various military drill exercises along with a statement reading "prepared for battle".
The video was released by People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theatre Command, which has responsibility for an area that includes Taiwan, and showed fighter jets and warships operating together, mobile missile launchers being moving into place and amphibious assault vehicles, with a small map of Taiwan included in one of the Chinese characters that make up the video's title.
It comes as Taiwan's defense ministry said in a statement on Sunday that a Chinese navy group led by the carrier the Liaoning had entered waters near the Bashi Channel, which connects the South China Sea and the Pacific and separates Taiwan from the Philippines.
China's defense ministry did not answer calls outside of office hours on Sunday. China's Taiwan Affairs Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
China, which views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, detests its president Lai Ching-te as a 'separatist', and the Chinese military routinely operates around the island. China has not ruled out using force to bring Taiwan under its control.
Last week at his keynote national day speech, Lai said the People's Republic of China had no right to represent Taiwan, but that the island was willing to work with Beijing to combat challenges like climate change, striking both a firm and conciliatory tone, but drawing anger from China.

To effectively defend Taiwan, allied nations must significantly bolster their industrial capacities. While China may anticipate losing some ships in the event of an invasion, its vast industrial power allows for rapid rebuilding of these losses, giving it a long-term advantage. Wars are not only fought on the battlefield but also won through sustained industrial output.

The Philippines must not underestimate China's capabilities or overly rely on U.S. support. We need to urgently enhance our own defense capabilities, focusing on swift modernization. This should include strengthening home defense systems, conducting national defense drills, and integrating the construction of bunkers into NDRRMC projects for civilian protection.

The world stands on the brink of a major conflict, and the worst possible scenario is being caught unprepared. Immediate action is essential to safeguard national security and ensure our readiness in the face of any potential threat.

Garnett Genuis MP (Member of Parliament) delivered remarks on the bill passage in the reception on Parliament Hill.
