I ride around Washington DC to explain the best possible way to lock up your bicycle. Honestly, the best method that trumps all is probably leaving your bike indoors. If you have a garage or an empty hallway, consider leaving it there instead of outside overnight.

Take these protective measures seriously since bicycle wheels, seats, and frames get stolen all the time. This by the way doesn't only apply to major cities, even some rural communities have problems with bike thieves.

Use a U lock as your primary lock, and a cable lock as a secondary lock. NEVER USE A CABLE LOCK AS YOUR PRIMARY LOCK!!

About the bike missing a wheel: the owner might have detached that wheel and carried it with them to prevent it from being stolen. I know of guys who will lock the frame and 1 wheel, and than detach and carry the other with them.

I need to put like 2 U-locks on my bike and then the steel cable with a really strong padlock

I’m confused. First you point out a place that isn’t crowded and where there’s no bikes and you say “don’t park here”. Then you tell us don’t park somewhere crowded where there’s a lot of cars and pedestrians because bike will get stolen. Well I’m in a big city - where else am I supposed to park? 😞

After locking your bike, lift the bike to see if you actually locked it onto the post. Sometimes u lock up just the bike next to the post.

Also, if you have disc brakes, put a decent padlock or 2 around the disc rotar’s, along with 2 D locks on the frame if you have 2 but 1 is ok. With the padlocks on the discs it can’t be ridden away easy either. Just adds extra security and takes more time for a bike thief. The more locks the better IMO

I think the duck tape improves on your roadmaster... at least it'll be more secure.

I’ve invested in an Abus alarm folding lock, a U lock, a cheap motion alarm and a chain. With these I can protect the bike reasonably. Figure two alarms going off simultaneously will worry most thieves. Still wouldn’t leave it for very long anywhere. May also add data dot protection and register the bike.

nice fake ducttape job, indicating its a high dollar bike.

I will say that there have been times when I've locked the front wheel and the frame to the post with a decent chain instead of the other way around. There is the idea that getting that rear wheel off is more time consuming and messy also, therefore it's less likely to be stolen. But I mostly do it the other way around and I also use a secondary cable or chain. The fact is you get better habits for this stuff when you have better locking gear. Part of that is that you just have more locking gear available! Also when I use the heavy chain lock I'll often use a pad lock with the secondary cable which just seems less tedious to me. You don't have to leave it unlocked to join them.

The street rack does not to be entirely fixed/bolted in the ground! See at 4:07 in the video. Not sure the rack is safe enough.

prevent bike theft by crapifying bike eg using duct tape is advised or using very cheap bike in high bike theft areas
