Cheap bike lock

My folding bike has a very cheap lock for years. It is the 4 dollar one you showed first in your video. But my bike has never been stolen and I can leave it anywhere as long as I lock the bike to something else like a lamp post. But my bike looked old and very very used, with different non matching parts, rust, more rust and a lot of scratches. Every thief who would take my bike would feel ashamed that they took it and nobody would offer him serious money for it. However, since I service it myself it is technically in a 100% condition, but you cannot see that. Last month it got a nice Marathon plus tyre at the rear wheel. Riding a bicycle should be a relaxed experience, so you do not want to be stressed if you leave it somewhere for some shopping or getting an icecream. But I am never stressed leaving my bike somewhere.

Put the lock through the back wheel and rear triangle when locking it to a bike stand. The thieves will have to work at cutting the lock to ride it away or carry the bike away which is slower for them. I've seen pipe cut bike stands mostly near train/tube stations.

Nice mini vid. I think secret is to only ride your least desirable bikes in populated areas. Make your bike look worse than others nearby! Or take a wheel off your bike/ seat/ let your tyre down etc so more problems!

I've spent a long time cycling in cities and I've found what saves a bike is being the least viable target. Using a lock that's just good enough it can't be popped or snipped on a bike that looks just old or generic enough it won't sell for much in a place just busy enough there's a chance someone would stop tends to be more than enough. The electric bike in the video at the end of this is a shiny enough prize someone will take a risk on it and there's nothing through the wheel so it can be rolled away. It's like watching the videos of people brazenly stealing banksy doodled street furniture, it's usually ridiculous to secure a satellite dish with more than a couple of bolts, but that changes when someone can see it in terms of months of rent.

Another trick bike thieves use is to loosen the ground anchor bolts on the bike stands, I've come across this on a number of occasions so always check! Basically your just buying time with bike locks usually the more you pay the harder and the longer time needed to break the lock.

guy was a bit brazen with cutting the stand, huh. we're in the age of battery powered angle grinders, there is no adequate protection against theft, but everyone having a camera handy is definitely a good thing when it comes to this.

The damn 180 to the boltcutters opposite the bike locks was insane.

How are you supposed to sell locks like that why????

Never lock your bike out of direct sight. Cafe and bar owners - you want my money? let me bring my bike in or lock up outside in sight of where I’m having my coffee. I live in a hard city where bike thieving is a daily reality . Any lock that can stop a pro bike thief is too heavy to carry in reality . They carry cordless angle grinders . The best way to be safe is adjust and modify your attitude and behaviour . Get street wise and realise you’re a target . I’m not riding trails in Yosemite, streets is real .
