Personally, I like to smear my bicycle with my own faeces in order to deter criminals. If my bike is stolen, at least I'll feel good knowing that the thief is covered with my own shit.

Here is a tip..  Just chill and wait for the thief to come by and try to jack your ride and then proceed to violently stomp his ass into the ground.   If everyone starts doing that we might get somewhere.

Some Dutch tips that are actually useful (not, 'put a sticker on it'):

1. Buy a cheap used bike as a commuter.  If you want to commute on an expensive bike then lock it inside
2. Use 2 different types of lock
4. Cover up expensive saddles, like Brooks, with a cheap rain cover

The guy in the grey t-shirt looks soo shady.

To prevent my bike being stolen, I put a shotgun cartridge into my seat-tube and it is detonated by the pressure of someone sitting on the saddle.  There's a little lever I installed to arm/disarm the mech.  I use a lock too of course - but if anyone dares cut it and ride off, they get a kaboom up their kaboose.

What is wrong with taking front wheel off and locking with back wheel and frame. Seems like an obvious thing to do on quick release bikes but doesnt seem to be popular anymore? Is it to protect the fork?

Duct tape instead of stickers.  If it looks like it's being held together with duct tape, thieves often won't even try.

A couple of friends of mine took their bikes to the college.  One was a $60 Walmart special, and the other was a $2, 500 Cannondale MTB wrapped in duct tape.  They locked the bikes together with the Walmart bike underneath the Cannondale and left them there for several hours.  A thief came, cut the lock, moved the Cannondale out of the way, and stole the Walmart special.  The Cannondale was still there when the two friends went back.

I'd advise to use two different types of locks. One to lock the front wheel and the frame, and another one to lock the rear wheel and the frame and lock your bike in a busy, well lit area. A U-lock and a fat plastic shielded cable lock will probably be fine.

I used to know a guy who'd take his seat and pedals off his bike when he locked it up.
He'd say "Honestly, you can't stop them taking it. But you can stop them being comfortable or going very fast."

The trick is to lock your lock trough the spoke gap where the valve is. When they try to force the lock they will almost always damage either the valve or the tire. So thiefs wont try stealing a bike locked like that as it is too cumbersome to repair it before reselling. At least that is the case according to Dutch bike thiefs

At the end of the day, you really only need to make your bike harder to steal than the bikes it's parked next to. Most bike/bike component theft is a result of opportunity. It falls into the same category as smash and grab, as the thief usually sees something that's easy to get, regardless of value, and goes for it. Make your bike/components more complex to steal, or at least have the appearance that it's more complex to steal and most thieves won't even make an attempt.

In NYC I see seat locks as well. Seats and handle bars are something you want to come back to and I didn't see that covered in this vid.

Instead of using a cable with your D lock, just use a second lock, it will weight about the same in your backpack but if you use both of them to attach the bike to a solid object, the thief will have to cut two locks instead of only one.

My best tip for locking your bike is to avoid combination locks, these are incredibly easy to open. I bought the most expensive combo lock available from the top online bike shop in UK and unlocked it while it was still in it's packaging and I could not even see the numbers, in less than a minute and I'm not even a thief !
I returned the lock still in it's packaging but unlocked and they were so surprised that they sent me the best key lock they had worth 3 times as much !
