Father may have cast aside his 7 desires, but he never obtained the 7 virtues.

"humans who dare to play god must pay a steep price for their arrogance, that is truth" Man to be condemned by your own words....

Father ended as he began: small and insignificant.

I think I noticed something potentially interesting from this scene. When the Homunculus asked the Truth what was wrong with seeking knowledge and perfection, it didn't answer because intrinsically, there is nothing wrong with those goals. Similarly, there's nothing wrong with performing human transmutation. It's impossible, as stated in the story by Ed, but not immoral or 'wrong" as we conventionally understand.

The characters think the same way as we do, and consider their missing body parts as marks of their sins, but the Truth doesn't seem to think that way. From what I remember, the Truth never condemned Ed and Al for their actions in performing human transmutation. It never "punished" them. All it was doing was exacting the toll, the price for peeking into the well of knowledge beyond the gate. It never assigned the price based on morality or anything banal like that, it merely functioned in the way phenomenons such as gravity do. Just like the earth and celestial bodies, the Truth doesn't really care about the underlying "morality" of our actions because they're meaningless to them and it only imposes the consequences. That being said, the Truth does seem to value personal learning and growth, no matter what sort of path taken in one's life. And the Homunculus, despite having gained so much knowledge and power and time, didn't learn a single thing, as shown from him screaming "What should I have done!?" That was his ultimate failure, and the Truth merely dished out the appropriate consequence for his chosen actions.

He removed his Pride, Wrath, Lust, Envy, Greed, Sloth and Gluttony, but never overcame them. He sought out perfection never taking into account he was already beyond human beings. He sought to leave his flask, but chose to remain inside another of his own making. He sought knowledge, but in the end, he knew nothing. His life was irony incarnate.

Something I didn't realise until it was pointed out to me- Father's Gate of Truth is COMPLETELY BLANK! Think about that for a second.

"why god? how did I disappoint you?"
"your voice is way too high pitched and annoying, get back in that gate and shut up."

"Humans who would dare to play God must pay a steep price for their arrogance. That is truth." A bit scary when it is turned on you, isn't it... Dwarf?

What gets me is that Truth is almost always smiling when talking to someone, but when Father points at Truth and goes, “Who the hell do you think you are?”, Truth instantly frowns. Father is so arrogant he can’t even appreciate that this Being is beyond him. He lacks respect for the Truth, thus he lacks respect for all things, and as such he has signed his own death warrant. This subtlety adds to the gravity of The scene. Just a really neat detail.

"What's wrong with craving knowledge? What's wrong with seeking perfection?!"

There's nothing wrong with craving knowledge or seeking perfection. However the methods chosen to obtain such things were cruel. Those who seek perfection are the ones who know best that it cannot exist in our life. Those who crave knowledge understand best that there is always something new to learn.

To obtain all at once would be an act of arrogance, because only a god would truly be able to understand such things. Thus to obtain all at once, is like trying to become a god. That, "Father" was the moment of your arrogance, and therefore the ultimate sin that you have commited. And as you said, "Humans who play 'god' must pay a steep price. THAT is the truth." therefore you will be punished for your "arrogance".

It is interesting that Father states "Who the Hell do you think you are?!" even though he clearly refers to the white being as "God".

This further demonstrates Father's arrogance. Very beautiful.

to all debates: he removed his desires, which is not OVERCOMING them. that is a flaw. he stole his power, instead of using his own. that is another flaw. and finally, he boasted to others that he was better, when he never did anything to earn what he was. the last straw.

Everyone treating truth like he is a villan. Its kinda funny. But he treats everyone equal. People say that it doesn't even have morality because of what it did to edward. When edward did something wrong. I personally kinda understand truth because he is a god. A god isnt there to cater to the people. Its there to keep things in balence. When you tip the balance its only normal you should get punished. If anything its ment as a lesson

Father's ultimate demise due to his inability to understand humans, beyond baser, dark impulses was so satisfying. Even when he's getting dragged back into the Gate, he still completely misunderstands why he was doomed. Definitely a satisfying end.

Ha, and people think FMAB had no thought provoking moments.

Father and Dante both got such delightfully ironic defeats;
Father was dragged back to his birthplace as a punishment for the very sin he wanted to punish himself (arrogance).
Dante was swallowed alive by Gluttony; she erased his mind to make him more malleable, but in the end all it did was make her unable to control him.

One piece of symbolism in this scene that I really like is that Father's door of knowledge is completely blank. He never truly learned one damn thing in his entire existence.

Even now, this scene is terrifying. Animated existential dread

This scene is legendary, when you watch the entire series. It's very symbolic and there is so much depth to this moment.
