This is part of why I love Ed's character so much.

Most people would fall into despair in his shoes, but he turned a symbol of despair into a beacon of hope. Gotta love his resilience and optimism.

The "Human transmutation was impossible all along" was one of the creepiest plot twist this show had to offer. "We killed our mother twice" just breaks my heart

I think he just made another incomplete creature with his mom’s DNA and nothing that ever could’ve resembled her.

What a nice parting gift Hohenheim gave to his sons. He knew Ed was eavesdropping on himself and Pinako, and knowing Ed's resolve to know the truth, no matter the cost, , he implanted the idea in Ed's brain that the boys didn't kill their mother a 2nd time (or kill anybody a 2nd time). Hohenheim could have outright told Ed, but he wouldn't have believed him. Good dad, sometimes.

I think the Laugh was supposed to be uneasy because to visualize what's going through Ed's head. He's relieved at the Fact that he didn't kill his mother or whatever that was but at the same time he's in shock that everything they did was doomed from the start.

This is a situation like nina
She took alexanders body and gave it some of herself's apperance and abilities like speaking

And when they tried to bring their mother back
Al took his mothers apperance but as ed's granny said "im pretty sure its male"
But her mothers ribcage didnt change much
But it was too much for al's skin
And the ribs bursted trough

So heres my theory :
You cant bring something back to life, YOU become the dead
And most of the time your soul rejects the new body like how the thing that looked like their mom which had al's soul inside of it died pretty quick
And as car mentioned nina is in such pain

When Al sacrificed himself so ed gets his arm back

The arm ed got wasnt very muscular...
In fact it looked child like....

Technically he had actually recreated his brother's body instead of his mother

It could also be it needs 1) 2 children body to resurrect an adult. 2) the one who get transmuted was Alphonse or 3) it's just impossible and forbidden. Really missed and forgot about the ending of these especially their dads saga.

It's messed up because he's not laughing out of relief he's laughing because he's having a mental breakdown.

When I read this part in the manga, I couldn't stop laughing. It was like the end of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. All that fuss and the whole operation doesn't work. Period. You literally LITERALLY can't bring people back to life with Alchemy. What a sick joke.
