I ended a 16 day water fast with a massive spaghetti dinner at my grandmother's house. The next morning my blood sugar was 380 and I had hyperkalemic paralysis and severe edema. My hands and legs were paralyzed for nearly a week and I put on 16 pounds of water weight in 24 hours. My doctor said I'm lucky to be alive. And yes, I know I'm an idiot.

Hi Dr. Berg,

I went from IF to a forced prolonged fast caused by eating inappropriately!

I did not realize the IF had changed my ability to digest food and drinks.

I had also been on an SSRI for months, in addition to not-very-precise keto.

So almost three weeks of fluctuating (but mostly severe) diarrhea has been the result!

Finally connected the SSRI to the extreme prolonged nature of the diarrhea and went off it cold turkey last night (so tonight is my second night).

Only clear fluid today (fresh lemon juice, raw honey, pink Himalayan salt, and filtered water).

Last bout of diarrhea and abdominal pain was this morning.

So I’ll be applying your suggestions with broth, maybe very well cooked organic white rice, tomorrow, hopefully!

water fasted for 10 days and broke it by gorging on everything. 5 days later i still have heartburn, liver pain, hangiver symptoms...generally feel crappy. be careful people.

Wish I'd watched this before my first 48h fast. I felt great fasting but was so sick when I ate. Thank you Dr Berg. Doing 72h this time. Feel great. Have bone broth ready for first small meal. Always learning! 😁

I do several 7-day fasts a year and never have an issue ... but, turns out I am doing just what Dr. Berg recommends. When I first start eating, I have half an avocado, a few green olives and a small wedge of cheese. I wait a while and then have something more. And then in the evening I will have a light meal with a bit of salad and piece of chicken or some such. This works very well. Also, that's good advice on breaking the fast if it isn't going well. Sometimes I pick a week for a fast and it turns out after a couple of days that my body is screaming at me. It just isn't in that place that I need it to be to do a healthy fast. Goes to show that scheduling a week is an intellectual decision, but your body needs to have a say in it, too. When the timing is right, it's a wonderful experience.

They never really went into the detail but this is one of the first things you learn before starting a longer fast in church so I was always aware of this as I’m going to church my whole life, I’ve even heard of a couple people die from overeating after a fast but I never really knew why until now.

While water fasting, I drink barley coffee, it has potassium and magnesium, and I add ginger and Turmeric because they have benefits that help with keto and autophagy

I also drink a little table salt and it helps

Good advice. I broke my 14 day fast with a vegan pizza (I couldn’t resist) and passed out. It was the weirdest thing. Will do better next time. Thanks!

Broke a 9 day fast with three small pieces of beef fat. Got sleepy, shallow breath, and a headache. Moral of the story, Be careful when coming off a prolonged fast lol.

I did a 72 hour and I ate too much too fast and my heart started racing for a few hours, was kind of scary, I didnt even pig out just like a normal meal, but now I've learned to ease back in alot slower.

During my fast I use Keto Chow electrolyte fasting drops plus a potassium supplement.
My intention is to end my fast with bone broth and a pat of butter the first day and possibly the second. Day 3 bone broth with egg
Day 4 bone broth, egg and calf liver
Day 5 eggs and bacon
Day 6 back to strict carnivore
I'm also checking my blood sugars and ketones during the fast and keeping a journal

I have done 3 day fasts, 5 day fasts, and 10 day fasts several times over the last 5 years and I always eat whatever I want to break them; big cheeseburger and fries, pasta, steak and potatoes, steak and salad, whatever, and I have never had an issue. My understanding is that you’ll get RS if your really malnourished. But who knows what’s right. Do your own research and talk to your Doctor.
