Hello there!
My name is Rhiannon Mackenzie and this is a theory video on the movie Coraline directed by Henry Selick 2009. The theory is that Coraline never leaves the other world when she first enters the little door, a theory I've heard other YouTubers discuss on other channels but I wanted to add thoughts to it as well.
I hope you enjoy it and if you want to see more please subscribe to my channel!
New video every Friday!

The thought that her real parents might still be looking for her

ALSO don’t forget the painting over the chimeny. The painting where the kid licks the ice cream. The kid never licked it before she ented the portal. (When she was with her normal parents) Nor did he have an ice cream at all. He just stands there. Coraline calls the panting "boring"

After she enters the kid is suddenly has an ice cream and is licking it. Even after thinking she escapes the kid is still licking the ice cream.

When The Beldam knew Coraline was a fighter - a hero needing a happy ending, The Beldam gave her exactly what she wanted AND CUSTOMISED THE WORLD TO MAKE CORALINE HAPPY.

She tricked Coraline into thinking she'd won allies on her quest to defeat The Beldam.
- "Spinks and Forcible" giving her the triangle thing for example.

She played on Coralines sympathy:
- Saving the ghost children after The Beldam pushed her through the mirror and Coraline heard their sad stories and needing to be freed.
- Seeing other Wybie had been hurt by The Beldam "because of Coraline" and had freed her knowing he couldn't escape to safety and that was on her conscience.

By kidnapping Coralines parents Coraline was in such a heightened emotional state and didn't think about the most important question:
- HOW did the Beldam get into the real world to kidnap her parents AND make and leave a doll behind too? Her rats can't kidnap people and Other Wybie made it clear to her that "people" can't leave.

Also Coraline assumed The Beldam only had one method to trap all kids - the fact that her life became so idyllic afterwards should have raised red flags.

The cat just seemed very suspicious in all of this, like he was getting Wybie and Coraline into all the right places to ensure Coraline was taken.

And that doll was made A LONG time ago so The Beldam knew decades ahead that Coraline was coming.

How long had Mr Bobo's "mice" been talking to him?

What prompted Spinks and Forcible to hide that triangle thing at the bottom of a candy bowl?

It's almost like they KNEW.

Weird.

Sorry, I have no one to talk to about Coraline so I just have a massive ramble lol

Take care everyone🙂✌

I believe that the ghost children are also the beldam's creations, it wouldn't make sense for her to trap her behind the mirror with real ghosts of the children she killed for them and Coraline to conspire against her without having control and she wasn't surprised when coraline mentioned the ghosts. so I think she made them to give coraline the idea to go on a hunt for their eyes in order to set up a scenario that would redeem her "real" mother (also the beldam) so that she could still feed off of her love since she knew that coraline wouldn't lover her as the other mother or her true self.

Also, kind of unrelated, but I think that Spink was the one that was right about the stone's use being for finding bad things as forcible was wrong about the tea leaves being a giraffe. Also I think that the beldam puppeted the other dad and wybie to appear disobedient to leave bread crumbs to make coraline think she was figuring out the truth about the other world on her own knowing that she wouldn't take it at face value/get board of a perfect world either due to seeing her distrusting nature with the real wybie when she recieves the doll, her being board unless there was an adventure like when she first found the door or how hesitant she was when she arrived there. also that would explain Spink giving her a prediction of danger and saying the stone shows dangerous things, if she's the beldam's creation its another clues to that place being bad, bobinsky's messages from the mice to. plus bobinsky being able to communicate with mice is more evidence that she never left the other world as as far as we can tell the real world is realistic to our world so the real bobinsky probably wouldn't be able to understand mice.

as for the cat, i want to believe he's real, especially as he appears to know that taking the key to the well wouldn't do any good, though that wouldn't explain why he didn't talk after she believes shes back in the real world, unless its to protect her from the reality that she might have been stuck there for years. Im not sure if time passes differently because if the time she seemed to come out to find her "real" parents missing and rotting food is still the other world disguised then that might not be how time passes, unless the beldam stuck to how much time would have actually passed if she did return to the real world at that point. though another theory is that he is a construct and thinks that coraline realised she's still in the other world and figured out that the well is another portal.

also the beldam might have actually wanted to get the key through one of the portals so that another child could go through when coraline dies and she needs another child to feed off of.

Personally, I believe coraline did technically “escape” the other world, but she’ll never be able to fully escape it if that makes sense. It’s way too tight knit with her reality. So even if she did technically make it back, the other mother still has control over her life. Even if Coraline is technically safe for now.

Ok, I'm intrigued, so lets break down the biggest hole in this theory

Why make her think she is free? If she really is still in the other world, then the Beldam is pulling a long con. Perhaps making her think the buttons were necessary was part of the con, and that she just needs Coraline to be present in order to consume her. Making her feel like she's safe in that house having sealed the door does seem to be the winning strategy, because it guarantees she won't fight. We also know that they don't necessarily need to have buttons on their eyes, because when she first meets the 'other' Finks and Percival, they look like their normal selves.

The ghost and the cat could also be part of this con. The mice creations could travel between worlds, so why can't the Cat? Maybe the doll being the Beldams eyes was a lie too.

It could be that the Beldam constructed these perceived weaknesses to imply that she could be beaten, where in truth she is extremely skilled and much more powerful than we even know.

I think Coraline was just dreaming about all of this every single time she went to bed after she was done with dinner. I think it's because of her malnourishment she wants so badly to have a buffet of food and better parents so she dreams about this and then when she wakes up she snaps back into reality and remembers what her life is like 🤷

I had my suspicions when in the ending seen it pans over the garden and the garden resembles the other mother. Then the cat disappears making me even more convinced!

When the bedlam speaks of sewing buttons into coraline’s eyes, she mentions having other children, she may have control over their souls. Coralines biggest struggle is that she’s away from her friends, from people like her, who know and see her, and she only gets pulled out of solitary after she agrees to get the eyes for the children. After escaping through the door, she’s still wearing clothes from the other world, clothes that her parents don’t question her miraculously having all of a sudden. Also the other mother may possibly be fae in nature, fae have been known to shapeshift, to steal children, and have a love for bugs (which are heavily prevalent on both sides of the door, and spiders the most, which she ends up resembling by the end of the film) and hate cats, also the matter of the faerie ring, and how happy she is to receive the cheese, a milk product. Coralline/ the doll herself may also be a changeling, (as most depictions of changeling children show them as ignorant of their origins until they come into their powers) as we see her with an intense love for gardening, the rain, and all the bug decorations in her room(ie. the dragonflies in her room from the real world, and the clip in her hair). Following this theory the cat may be a Cait sith guide sent to bring her back to stay, seeing how likely it is that she never left.

The ghost children probably thought she would win, that she was different from them. Smarter. But she was fooled too.

That's so clever. Like now she's trapped, the door is locked and she doesn't even have the keys anymore. She locked herself in and gave Beldam the keys.

What abbout the buttons coraline did escape because the beldam needs to put to buttons on anything to be able to control them so when she went back nobody had bunnonts hinting that she did actualy escape

The year of the three hard boiled sweets in miss spinks and forcibles apartment are possibly the date of the other children leading onto the fact that the cat at the end of the movie disappeared behind the tree but towards the beginning of her realisation that she was trapped the cat is seen to disappear through it again? Just an opinion!

i think im a little late but in the end of the movie she throws a rock with the key, what if the well is indeed a portal that means the other mother has the key.

I’m not even gonna lie I think the beldame can see the future, because when Coraline was at Mr. B’s show, they were having like a little bit of a conversation and he responded to her into it and how was it like he knew she was gonna say it was amazing? Or maybe I’m just overthinking.

This theory is correct it’s so obvious! The cat disappearing at the end clearly imply to the audience that Coraline never escaped and is still in the Other World because the cat could only do that in the Other World without question she is still in the other world and the garden at the end resembles the face of either Coraline or the other mother and we all know the other mother doesnt look like Coraline she is a spider thing so there we go theory solved where is Coraline 2!
