What Drinking Coffee does to Your Sleep NEW study

Looking to understand the health benefits and risks of coffee consumption? Check out this recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicine. The study suggests that while drinking at least one cup of coffee daily may increase physical activity, it can also decrease sleep duration and potentially increase the risk of a specific type of heart palpitation. However, the health consequences of coffee consumption are more complex than a single outcome, and a personalized approach is necessary. The study involved monitoring the steps, sleep, blood glucose, and heart rhythms of 100 healthy adults who drank as much coffee as they desired for two days and then abstained for two days, repeating this cycle for two weeks. The study found that participants took an average of 1,058 more steps on coffee-drinking days than on non-coffee days, but they slept 36 minutes less on days when they consumed coffee. Additionally, consuming more than one cup of coffee daily resulted in a 50% higher incidence of premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) compared to days without coffee intake, which could be bothersome for some individuals. The study also explored the genetic aspect of coffee consumption, indicating that a personalized approach to coffee consumption may be most suitable for evaluating health effects. Overall, this study emphasizes that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to coffee consumption, and individuals should consider their personal health goals, genetic predisposition, and tolerance when determining their ideal coffee intake. I am one of those slow metabolism coffee drinkers. My hands were shaking at work and felt anxious so I gave up coffee after years of drinking it. I feel so much better and I sleep better too. Coffee is not for everyone.

As far as sleep goes I am lucky. Been a great sleeper my whole life. Coffee every morning hasn’t affected that. It’s my hidden talent, perhaps

I have eliminated coffee in my life due to my nervous system and gut issues. And now I sleep better. All I drink that contains caffeine is green or black tea once every two weeks. 🤷🏻‍♀️☺️

I've been drinking an average of 2 cups a day since my teens. I`m now in my fifties. I think I've developed a tolerance to caffeine. I can drink a strong coffee 1 hour before going to bed, and still have no trouble falling asleep.

Thank you for the latest study which say the same as before really, each body its a different world, whats work for someone may not work for some else.
I used to drink 8 cups of espresso daily for 30 years, now i have reduced to around 3 average daily plus 2 green or lemon tea. Also drink water and coconut water. If i don't drink it I'm fine with tea but the first espresso early in the morning Do help me for exercises and at work. I'm aware espresso coffee its a natural drug with more benefits than bad side effects, and its delicious.🍒

Sometimes I go hours without drinking coffee . . . it's called sleeping.
A day without coffee is like . . . just kidding. I have no idea what that's like!
My birthstone is a coffee bean!

Seems like most of these studies don't track the time of day coffee was consumed. Seems for most people coffee in the morning will make you live longer, coffee in the evening will kill you.

A side-light: caffeine is also a way some people manage and monitor depression and other mood disorders: for example, an increased desire for it goes with the urge to hide in a snug place, and can warn of the need to adjust/restart meds.

Also note that friends with ADHD report it helping them get to sleep. The mirror of their paradoxical reaction to some sedating antihistamines.

Yes, each person needs to know their own reactions to common legal drugss!

I had a strong feeling he was going to say PVC when he said "certain type" in the intro. I had stress related PVC during a very stressful period. The stress ended and so did they.

Seems like cutting coffee with half decaf should be taken into consideration as well as drinking it on an empty stomach versus a full stomach. These little tweaks make a difference too, no?

I like the taste of coffee, especially coffee ice cream, coffee sodas and other coffee flavored items but I can't drink black coffee without milk or cream. But I am not addicted, one hot or iced coffee a week. I am not affected by caffeine, it does not wake me up or keep me awake.

What does this study have to do with drinking coffee regularly, long term? Nothing.
