Electric bikes: everything you need to know

We love electric rideables. Hoverboards, skateboards, scooters, motorcycles, mopeds, unicycles, tricycles… You name it, we’ve ridden it. But electric bikes belong in a category of their own because they are more than just a fun tech fad. They could actually be the future of transportation. That said, there’s a lot to choose from out there, and you don’t want to get fooled, so here’s what you need to know.

Around 5:20 in the video, we say that in Europe, class 1 e-bikes are the most popular. Actually, the most popular e-bikes in the EU are unregulated with motors rated at 250W.

Would you replace a car with an electric bike?

When I went to Europe, I was so surprised by how many people ride bikes. When I went to Amsterdam, there were more bikes than cars. If there were more bike lanes where I live, I would definitely ride more often.

Don't know if anyone has corrected this already, but regarding the stuff at 4:28:

Volts * Amps = Watts, which is a measure of power (work done per unit time).

Volts * AmpHOURS will give you WattHours, which is a measure of battery capacity. A 500Wh battery can power a 500W motor for 1 hour (minus minor losses due to efficiency).

There are not more e-bikes than regular bikes sold in the Netherlands. There is more overall revenue - but that is accounted for by the higher average price.

Idk why I'm even watching this. I live in the south where sidewalks & bike roads are as rare as someone not getting pregnant within ages 15-20

I agree, getting an electric bike made me experience the joy of biking again that I did when I was younger and didnt have any responsibilities. And I also bike MORE just because its so damn fun!

I live in gdansk, Poland. We have one of the first network of electric city bikes in Europe. And it works really well.

8:14 that's something else that needs to be considered... I wouldn't be locking my £2000 eBike to a lampost with a basic lock. The infrastructure to store them in town etc is required.

In the Netherlands eBikes are getting common very fast. While the 'young and fit' generation is struggling going up a hill with headwind with a regular bike. All the elderly are going 25 kph (15 mph), looking back triumphantly that they are faster, while taking over...

I never wanted an electric bike. Then my knees expressed their opinion. I could no longer ride up hills or ride more than 10km. In 2019 I bought an e-bike and love it. This year, 2021, has been my best year of cycling since 2014.

One thing to add, you'll still pick up punctures, and on an ebike this can be a chore . The product 'Green Slime' is a self sealing compound you can put in your inner tubes. Also I would also invest in puncture proof tires. Happy e-biking.
