Shopping for an ebike? Don't make these mistakes. Paul and Liz share ten tips for buying an ebike. Half of the people we meet in campgrounds bought the wrong bike!

Especially now, if you are shopping for an ebike, you will likely have to buy your electric bicycle online. It would be difficult to say the least to return a bike ordered online-- especially if you decide you don't like it after you assemble it. There are some very important things to look out for when buying an ebike including range, watts, and more.

😉Using the above links doesn't cost you any extra. These proceeds help us offset the costs associated with the many hours of work, camera and computer equipment, and help us continue to bring you valuable helpful and informative RV videos. Thank You!

Tips (10 tips plus 3 bonus tips!)
*****
1. Decide road or trail/mountain (where do you want to ride?)
2. Get pedal assist if you want exercise
3. Get throttle-only if you DON'T want exercise
4. Best option: pedal assist AND throttle
5. Know that some places ban ebikes
6. Avoid twist throttle
7. Get enough range
8. If you want to do hills, get 500 watt or more
9. Get a mid-drive motor if you plan to do hills
10. Decide how much you'll use an ebike
11. Weight of an electric bicycle is an important factor
12. Plan on getting a new bike rack, especially for ebikes
13. Protect your ebike from theft

Notes
****

To figure out range, multiply volts times amp hours, which will give you watt hours. Then compare watt hours to the size of the motor. That will give you an idea of how far you can go.

I want to personally thank you for making this video. Before watching it, I was confused about the whole battery thing. I had read plenty about them, but I still couldn't make heads or tails. But through your easy and simple explanation, the fog has disappeared and I finally know exactly what I'm looking for.

this video helped me understand a lot. THANK YOU. Quick story. I was riding with my husband yesterday in a very mountainous, beautiful area in Pennsylvania. I became so sad to the point of tears. My husband was taking on the hills with so much ease, and I had to keep getting off my bike, and so I felt like I was holding him back. I told him I wanted to purchase a pedal assist bike to avoid constantly getting off the bike, and having an ABSOLUTELY MISERABLE bike ride. I'm going to write down EVERY SINGLE suggestion. THANK YOU!

I was laid off due to COVID. I took all my money and bought an rv to live full time. Your guide was very helpful and I love your vibe. Thank you so much!

Looks like you are having so much fun enjoying each others company, and taking care of each other. That laugh, when the guy unzips his shirt and his reaction, is gold. Great couple 👍

I see many bike racks installed on vehicles that block the rear brake lights.
For added safety; Remember when you are using a bike rack on the rear of your vehicle you don't block off your brake lights. When I installed my 2" trailer receiver hitch, I wired the receiver at the same time with a four prong receiver just incase I wanted to pull a small trailer. Any small or large trailers require. Most automotive shops sell LED light kits you can install on your rack.I purchased mine from Princess auto for $30. Simply plug the lights directly into your trailer 4 prong plug for added safety. Thanks and have a safer day.

I think of my ebike as a time machine. I get on it, and I feel like I’m 25 again!

I think one or two additional considerations could be helpful. For those who want to transport their bicycle and have a sedan with a trunk, and don't want to use an external rack, there's an option to get a folding bike, with a little smaller wheels. There are also weight variations in these. I purchased a Lectric Lite which is around 46 pounds. So you can fold the bike frame and handle bars, so you can put it in the trunk to go to a park or some destination. I (and some others) use a moving blanket under/over the bike which helps protect the bike and makes it easier to slide it a little while putting it in, taking it out. For me, I live in a congested traffic area, and wanted to ride at a forest preserve bike path (a few miles away), or similar further away spots. Although the bike wheels are smaller, 20 inch, the bike handle bars and seat post extend further so it works fine to use for a standard height adult. I think seniors need to seriously consider using a step through frame which makes it easier to get on or off, particularly if the person has any joint or leg problems affecting mobility, which will impact their ability to mount or dismount from the bicycle. Some people have posted YouTube videos that are using an eBike (a while) after having had knee replacement, in part to get exercise and move their joints, but have difficulty lifting their leg very far to get on or off.

This was an EXTENSIVE and very COMPREHENSIVE breakdown on ebikes - we had no idea how in-depth they really were. Wow, grateful to have watched this video. We have chatted about ebikes recently and this will be a video that we will leverage when making that further consideration! Thanks Liz and Paul!!

And Paul... your shirt was fun!

E-bikes are great! I used mine to travel to work for 5 years where each day was a 25 miles round trip. Over the 5 years I travelled the equivalent of around the world!
It kept me fitter and saved a ton of money in petrol and car costs.
My e-bike had a twist throttle, as well as pedal assist, which was great for quick getaways from junctions and traffic lights, etc, I never had a problem with twisting it by accident.
My e-bike was a relatively cheap generic chinese bike with a rear wheel hub motor.
The quality was not up to german standards but then maintenance and parts were cheaper!
I love your yellow/orange smiley shirt by the way!
Thanks for posting.

Thanks for this video, this was one of the best short videos for potential ebike purchasers to guide them to buy a bike that works for them. I purchased an ebike for my wife 5 years ago, and purchased the wrong bike for her so this video will be very helpful for those that are contemplating a purchase. Even though we are looking for the right bike for my wife she has still enjoyed her bike tremendously. Ebikes are fantastic for people that are not interesting in training all winter so they can enjoy long ride during the biking season.
