I’m gen z and I remember when we switched to common core and that was the year I started not understanding math. As my middle school principal put it “You either get on the train or you get left behind”. They did not want us to understand math better they just wanted to shove it down our throats as fast as possible.

I'm almost 32. I have the teens at my workplace convinced that I'm some sort of mathematical genius because I can do math without a calculator. Not even always in my head. But the old way of writing out problems was so streamlined that it looks like mental math to these kids.

It is memorizing, as i got older I recognized patterns and now I can do multiplication in the thousands in my head. Money handling is a breeze too lol

As a parent who has told my son "I don't understand why you don't understand" more times then I can count, the "How's that going?!" really hit home.

Dude. The way I learned my multiple tables in math is that they literally timed us for 3 minutes to solve 100 multiplication problems every day when it's math class. Then they take the ones that can solve the first 20 in that first session and have them do it again. Happened to me and I know common math without needing to think
