Seriously who understands this new math?

What was wrong with old math? As long as you had enough fingers and toes to count on you were golden!

This is an example of trying to complicate a simple problem.

I do. 41 x 36. You just multiply the number 41 by the number 36 and you’ll have the answer. Doesn’t matter how you do it.

Vertical double digit multiplication was perfected and used long before any of us were born! No need to reinvent the wheel!

I had to learn this in order to help my niece and nephew with their homework. Since I wasn't familiar with CC math, I went back and started from the beginning -- like the stuff for kindergarteners. Once I got into it, I liked it and thought it flowed quite nicely. It's much more conceptual and requires that you understand math on a deeper level.

41×36 = (40 + 1)(30 + 6) = 1200 + 240 + 30 + 6 = 1440 + 36 = 1476. This is a much more intuitive way to multiply large numbers because it comes directly from general algebraic rules i.e. (a + b)(c + d) = ac + ad + bc + bd. If you think this isn't useful I'll assume you were always bad at math.

So this is what me increíble was talking about them changing math

When I was introduced to math, we had paper and pencil. The kids can not retain what they learn these days. They have become uneducated. And some can't read. And you wonder why the 18 years and up are living in there parents homes.

I remember the first time my kid brought home a book from school to read. He was talking about phonics and sounding out words and I was like, nope, let's go get the audiobook, buddy.

Actually, think of the terms 'prime' and 'composite'. 41 is prime, given that it's only factors are 1 and itself. 36 is composite, given that it's factors are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 36.

What's special about this is that 36 is a perfect square 6x6. You could use any of the factor pairs, but I'd have preferred to use 6x6, as it would be simpler. 41x6 would be 246; then 246x6 would give you 1476.

Now, if you really want to stir the pot, do this first 36x40 to get 1440. Next, understand that you are one 36 short. Add 1440 and 36 to get 1476.

I used to jump on the bandwagon of fearing Common Core, but looking at this is exactly how I would do large math problems in my head. Break them down to easy ones like 10s and 5s. Children do not care about memorizing math like we did back then, especially with children surrounded by theatre quality games and entertainment in their hands. I tutor kids and maaany barely even know how to multiply the numbers in the 12x12. So trying to multiply large numbers is something that’s even more daunting to them. This is literally how you break it down in your head. People just hate and fear monger but this actually makes perfect sense and doesn’t require rote memory like our education did. This is far more effective and teaches that you can break down anything. We’re just don’t like it because we weren’t raised with it. The metric system is by far a better system, and we still didn’t like that when it was implemented temporarily in the 70s. But many of the workbooks at schools are a joke and rely on the teacher to teach the method. If the student didn’t listen they’re assed out and that’s not right. Our school system is messed up on so many degrees but I support common core y’all just mad cuz y’all too lazy to learn something better than what you learned lmao 😂 “37 times 37, you should just know it” that’s not teaching especially if you’re a slow learner like me lol. Rote memorization is one dimensional and not that effective.

Is this really hard to understand, or are you just so out of practice with math that you don’t know anything?

Literally took me a few seconds to get 5 as the answer. 90 divided by 18, 18 goes into 90 five times so the answer is 5. Common core is a disgrace.

this so-called lattice crap is probably go for people good with math and want to do math problems quicker in their head, but just teaching the old fashion way would make more sense for most students. Why are we reinventing the wheel. Most of the kids leaving high school now can't even count out change without a calculator. We have really screwed the pooch on education by trying to be fancy with everyone.

I graduated HS in 2015, and in elementary school they were first experimenting with “lattice math” which is really similar and just as useless and unnecessary

Fucking Lattice is what they called it when I was a kid in like 08, I remember them teaching us this shit and making us take tests it in it, THE SAME YEAR we learned basic multiplication like we were gonna use it over the standard, I remember my teacher fucking almost made me stay back because I just ended up using regular multiplication every time cause I literally could not understand lattice

Mine is different. 41 x 6 = 246. Then 41 x 30 = 1230. 1230 + 246 = 1476. Just separating it into multiply and addition. Because you’re finding out how many 41s are in 36, make two easy multiplies. After that you add them together. Sum solved.

New math is from the 1950s. Christopher J Phillips has a great book on the political history on this topic. I think you mean to say Common Core. I assume you probably wouldn't be a fan of lattice multiplication either. I would guess you are a standard algorithm person. Good job helping your kid navigate public education. Parents matter!
