First Grade Math Problem Proves Why Common Core Sucks

What is 8 + 7? Seems easy enough to answer. That's unless it's a common core. This first grade math problem from Madison Central Schools proves why common core sucks.

When was the last time you knew a first grader understood the word *decomposed*

im in my sophomore year at high school, and on a math test there was this question, and it was an obvious answer from doing simple mental math. The answer i got was correct, but I got a 0 in application and communication because I didn't use the proper "equation" or "format", like what difference would it make if I got the right answer doing it in a faster and less complicated way! Honestly, school is so hard and our future depends on our effort as teenagers, and they like to make it HARD, why?

I learned addition using colored counting rods and because of this, I developed a similar approach to adding single digit numbers whose sum was 10 or greater. So in this case 7+8=?. How many numbers is 8 away from 10? The answer is 2. Take the number 2 and subtract from 7 and the answer is 5. 10+5=15. This would be confusing to those who memorized their addition tables using flash cards, but not to someone who learned math using colored counting rods where learning happens through seeing and touching these numbers. I’m not sure what my opinion is of common core yet because I haven’t read extensively about it, but I do know that I still use this concept when having to add larger numbers in my head when I don’t have a pencil and paper available.

At this point, just counting with your fingers is faster than doing all of this

They are literally just adding and subtracting 2 to get 5 + 10 instead of 8+7. Wtf is this. It's literally just an extra step

So I got what it is and how to do it but I find it funny that it asks you to simply add 8+2 to get 10 but you’re doing this giant loop around to answer the original problem. It’s so stupid.

You should see highschool math, currently in MCR3U functions and these equations are rediculous, i have no idea where you would use these in a real life situation.

children have like 1 hour to complete the test.. by introducing more steps to answer 8+7 simply requires more time to answer the question. i can deduct with more time required per problem and a constant 1hr time constraint to complete the test creates time management anxiety... i can see why kids are answering less questions, and getting stressed out trying to perform educationally...explains a lot.

Common core started when I was in third grade I'm in seventh grade I used to get 80% and 75% but now in 3rd I was like wow what is this. And it was so difficult I just couldn't now I'm just like I'm failing how I'm trying my best I doing my stuff how am I failing a test if I'm doing it how they showed me? Now I get 65% and probably below common core is confusing. I'm in honors class and what is this first grade math my brother is doing I do understand it a bit but not fully. We need to put an end to command core

That's why I put my 1st grader on a school that does NOT teach common core!

I agree that this question is worded terribly. But all it's saying, is the easiest way to do addition, is to turn the largest number into a manageable 10, 20, 30, 40, 50... and w/e amount you used to get the number to 10, 20, 30, 40, 50... you subtract it from the smallest number. Then you just have 10 + 5, which is easier to do in your head instead of 8 + 7. For instance 16 + 3 = 20 + 3 - 4 = 20 - 1= 19. Takes 4 to get to 20, and that's 1 more than the smallest number. It seems like an extra step, but this is the most intuitive way to do math in your head.

wait till you get to multiplication of double digit numbers. they dont do cross multiplying anymore its crazy my son had a problem I answered it with cross multiplying he said that is the easiest and fastest wy he's had learned to do this, he then showed "new " math common core way of doing it and it was so convoluted and confusing that it took 3 times longer to answer the question.

This is just stupid and insane! If math was like this when I was in the first grade in 1970 I'd still be in the first grade today! 😂

Why the fuck is it that many steps for a simple addition problem?

I tutor kids from 3rd grade up to 5th grade, and boy...their math passages are confusing and lengthy. Before, the questions were direct, like "What's 7+9=?"

For addition and subtraction this is legit pointless.
