I'm a Stanford & CalTech graduate in software engineering. Apperently, the way I solve math problems is unacceptable and is not the way to do it (according my little sister's 6th grade teacher). All I use is common sense!!! How are we supposed to stay ahead and lead the world, when the rest of the world has to wait on us to finish our 108 steps math?

While helping my daughter with long division, she told me I solved it wrong. I showed her a calculator matches my results. She still said it was wrong. It was wrong because I didn't doodle a picture... When did math class become art class?

As a testament to this woman, I want to tell you a quick story. My entire middle school and high school life, I had bad grades in math. Practically passing only because my teachers thought I was a good kid. I was a military brat and moved a lot, so the curriculums were always different. I still cant write in cursive, and the math was never at the last level I had advanced. When my high school credits were lost in a transfer after a relocation, I panicked. i had to make up 2 additional years in the new state. I took summer school, night school, and an online course just to catch up. I knew the math portion would likely cause me to fail. But their summer/night school system was different! I got my first A's in math! Without common core, a right answer was a right answer. Think of all the scientific discoveries that would have never happened because it wasnt done in the previous way. As an end note, I am a Marine Sniper...who are referred to as "people who weaponize math". Get rid of common core and stop holding people back!

Oh yeah, and when I sat down with my son in his senior year because he was stressed over an assignment to write a paper, I learned that nobody had ever taught him the basic mechanics of how to tackle a paper. He lamented over having to write a five page paper. I laughed and told him I used to feel that way and now lamented, if I was restricted to ten pages. I had to teach him paper layout, to form a hypothesis, gather his research materials, the value of index card notes with page citations, dealing those cards into stacks to support each body paragraph, and the final construct. We worked together for weeks. The teacher wanted a draft early. When he turned the draft in, she immediately accused him IN FRONT OF THE CLASS of plagiarism. This wasn't a final, but just a rough draft of the introduction. I was so pissed that we packed up all the materials with post it notes still marking pages worthy of citations etc and marched down to the school. I demanded that teacher make an apology to him in front of every one of her classes the next day (because rumors moved swift). But, I would not let him return to her classroom afterward. He graduated a month early through an alternative program. But, that teacher was bad. She argued she hadn't seen anything from him before to match. I countered that the school system had failed to teach it, this time he cared enough to ask a professional and received common sense guidance. They thought they would prove their point by asking him questions about the material, but he had all the answers. I should have sued that teacher for being a typical liberal ass back then. At least the principal looked at everything and apologized acknowledging it clearly was not plagiarism. Plagiarism is stealing another person's work, not to be confused with writing a good paper because you have an educated writer/ tutor/critic working with you teaching you how to master a task.

I am a survivor of elementary school common core and lemme tell you the amount of absurd bullshit that i got taught in math class made me seriously distrust the education system even to this day

7 years ago my stepson asked for help with his math homework. I helped him explained how to solve the problem in easy steps he could derive the right answers to homework afterwards. He asked me to check his work I did he had gotten 18 out of 20 questions correctly. He came home totally destroyed and upset from school that day. I asked him what had happened he told me that he had gotten an F because he hadn't answered the questions correctly. I went to see his "so called teacher and asked her, it whatever " why she gave stepson an F .Her response he didn't do the work correctly, My response was the answer correct her yes but it wasn't done in the correct fashion.
I guess if you don't do anything in the correct fashion its wrong?

I am a liberal democrat, with a B.S. in Physics. I teach math and physics. I can tell you, Common Core math is the most ridiculous method of teaching I have seen.
