Middle school teachers: “You won’t always have a calculator in real life.”

Me, an engineer, walking around with a Ti-89 in my purse.

I honestly feel like the calculator was added to the phone simply to spite all those teachers that said we wouldn't have one all the time

For those of you who don't know, common core math IS the teacher acknowledging that you do in fact always have a calculator in your pocket.

My old math professor doesn't really care what method we use, as long as we get the correct answer and we can explain it correctly on the board.

Didn’t know what common core math was, so I looked it up. Then I said “Ahh, bullshit” out loud

Common Core must've been invented by an administrator. They're the only ones who take something simple that isn't broken, and complicate it until it is.

Also my calculus professor said "Open notes, open books, use your calculator. You'll have literally all of this available to you on the job anyway."

Common core is like walking around the whole room just to leave when you were already next to the door from the start

Remember, Common Core is a re-introduction of the Old Math, and Gen X-Z grew up on the New Math. Also, Common Core is starting to be phased out already. There's a reason we went with New Math.

I get teaching the different methods of getting the answer because kids all handle math differently. However, if you're arriving at the same answer using a different method WHAT DOES IT MATTER?!

Anecdont time: One of my tutoring students had TWO math teachers that shared the same class and demanded the students use different methods. If they used the wrong method, they received 1 of 5 possible points for that problem. The poor kid of a math tutor got 20% on his test. Every answer was correct, he just used his dad's method to work the problems.

My math teacher literaly said at the end of the unit "you will never need to know this for anything. And will never learn it again but I still am required to teach it."

Edit: ok mabey I should have specified because everyone in trying to argue that algebra and geometry and whatever else is important like I said It wasn't. We were learning the real number system. I was not asking for a debate about if it was true or not.

Edit 2: also, why everyone assuming this is abt algebra?

My teacher was MRS.Quinn too. She told me calculators were for the privileged.

My favorite part of this is that Tom Lehrer wrote his song "New Math" about how teaching math had changed and parents didn't understand it...in 1965.
