If you're not losing weight even though you're “only eating 1000 calories a day" (or whatever other extremely low amount that would almost certainly represent a calorie deficit), then outside of very rare situations it's simply because you're not actually eating that amount.

If any "fat loss expert" tries to tell you otherwise and immediately points to some other reason as the most probable cause ("metabolic damage", "hormone imbalance", "starvation mode" etc.) they most likely have no idea what they're talking about.

The fact is simple: most people suck balls when it comes to accurately tracking their calorie intake.⁣

Even more experienced dieters can make mistakes with it, and beginners often aren't even remotely close.

This can be due to a wide variety of reasons, including...

- Sticking to a diet for a certain number of days during the week but then going overboard on others. Remember, it's your *average* calorie intake over the longer term that matters.

- Not accounting for "hidden" calories such as sauces, oils, liquids and snacks. These can add up insanely fast and make up a far bigger portion of your daily calories than you think.

- Eating out frequently. Restaurant meals are often much higher calorie than you realize (even if they're "healthy"), and just because you're using then nutritional info from their website doesn't guarantee accuracy.

- Basic measurement errors. Unless you're using a food scale and measuring everything by weight, you can easily end up consuming a few hundred calories more than you thought based off of small errors that gradually stack up.

- Not measuring anything, period. People will often state how many calories they're eating based purely on eye balling things and roughly estimating. Good luck with that unless you're an advanced dieter.

Conduct a "dietary audit" by precisely weighing out every single thing you eat and drink for a week or so (without fail, no exceptions) and you'll most likely find you were cosuming a lot more than you realized.

DON'T FORGET THE OIL you cook with/add to your dressing. That makes a huge difference but is often forgotten

People underestimate the calories they are eating and overestimate how hard they are working out.

Perfectly balanced.

I’m glad you said “track the calories you eat and DRINK”. I don’t know who passed the word that liquid calories don’t count, but they do. They’ll eat 1k calories and drink another 2k.

Skinny person/hardgainer here. From personal experience, it also works the other way around. I started bulking two years ago and assumed I was eating around 2500-3000 cals a day. Started tracking them after lack of progress and found that I was only getting about 1800 in a day, and that was me trying to BULK lmao.

Track your calories homies!

And don't underestimate the fact that the more restrictive a practice, the more likely for a pendulum swing in the opposite direction. A super low calorie diet leading to binges. A super intense workout regime after starting at zero leading to quitting. Sustainable is the name of the game, not just anecdotally, but also scientifically

Prime example. My girlfriend ate salmon for dinner. She said “I only ate 350 calories”. I said “did you count the butter and oil you used to cook it with” she said “no”

me rounding up 235 calories to 300 "just to be sure": *laughs in ed*

Another point to add is that a lot of these people unfortunately end up binge eating because of choosing extremely restrictive diets. They just don't tell anyone or log those binges out of shame.

Absolutely. I’ve always thought I had a slow metabolism, I even got my blood drawn to see if I had a thyroid problem, but no. Once I started tracking my food and snacks and becoming more active, it was so obvious why I always seem to struggle losing weight or keeping weight off.

I have a big appetite, and I crawl back to habits.

What, people can't write "obese" now too? Ok I'm going to mars

This is true. I started using MyFitnessPal and weighing my food, and I’m no longer stagnant in my weight loss, I keep dropping. Without counting calories you’ll always eat more than you think and go way over your limit

that’s why whenever i cut, i overestimate my calories by 100 or sometimes 200, helps keep me in check, vice versa for bulking

This is incredibly true. Once I started trying to lose weight, I realised how many calories my food had. I mostly cut out bread as I realised it has a lot of calories. I also found out a Margherita has about 800 calories so I've stopped eating pizza, especially in the evening. Another thing is I've increased my protein intake and lowered my carbohydrate intake

A common mistake is when people don’t pay more attention to serving sizes on the labels. They think the entire box or bag is a certain amount when really there are like 5 servings in there.

Yep. The day I bought a scale snd started weighing EVERY SINGLE THING I ate, from weighing the olive oil to the garlic I put in my meals I started shedding the lbs. 90 lbs down at the moment. There is literally no other way to succeed. I also tried monitoring my macros, but for me personally it did nothing. The only thing that worked was calorie tracking and staying in deficit.
