Cal Newport talks about the latest workplace trend called, "Quiet Quitting". It's not quitting your job, but instead it's quitting going above and beyond at work.

This became a TikTok phenomena over this past summer. Cal explains that the online discussion has now become a "one up" game. Cal then discusses Lifestyle Design and the importance of having a life outside of work.

I like your view Cal, we are having a lot of noise regarding this subject, I'll see if I can "drink from the source" checking the books / people you mentioned.

"Quiet Quitting" has been in the UK for decades - its called the 'UK Public Sector' (with their 'ingrained' attitude of "computer says no" as per their 'customer service' standards)

For Americans / outside UK, the 'UK Public Sector' - are the civil servant workers (blue/white collar), also nhs, higher / further education sectors who earn modest to high secure salaries with generous benefits (30+ paid holidays per year not inc public hols) and who have some of the most secure jobs and best pensions in the entire UK... all for minimum effort - as compared to the 'Private Sector' i.e. Finance, Law etc

I think the phenomenon crosses generations but the younger generation have less career capital and can therefore follow through with it.

If you aren't satisfied with your job, find a new one. While you're at a job, might as well give a good effort just as a matter of integrity. Doing just the minimum never ends well.

Understand the trend? Let me summarize: You get out of work, what you put into it!
"The great rethink"??? They are too lazy to even DO anything about it!
But yes, his summary is correct--each lazy group is trying to pile-on to the other.
And the bottom line, "This too shall pass!"
As an employer, I will concur with this narration--each generation has to have their own crisis of existential existence.
The ONLY difference--the internet! And the fact that each of these "kids posting 17 sec videos" have ZERO patience or ability to create something of worth. Good things take time. Do they even WANT to produce something of value? All I have heard from any of them are complaints. None of them have offered solutions. They certainly have not contributed to even the topic at hand, in an attempt to help to improve anything. Even those interviewing the ppl complaining have not asked what suggestions should be made to turn the tides. That alone should be a red flag!
