Winfield Scott Hancock: A New Corps & War's End | Part 13

As eventful as the Civil War was for Winfield Scott Hancock, the ending would be lack luster. Hancock would be moved away from the Army o the Potomac and be given a separate command. After battling Robert E. Lee's Confederate troops for four years, he never got to see the enemy surrender because he was commanding a military district encompassing West Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C. When Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, Hancock was responsible for calming down the city and the nation and it was Hancock who oversaw the prisoners accused of conspiracy to murder the president. One of the most difficult moments of his time overseeing the prisoners was when Mary Surratt was sentenced to death, along with three other conspirators. It was Hancock who read the order of execution.

Another excellent video. This one moved me because I felt bad that Hancock gotta shafted and was not able to see the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. The situation with Mary Surratt was sad too. But, Hancock took his vows to the Constitution and army seriously, and you gotta love and respect a man who is true to his word. Well done!!! Keep up the excellent work.

Have you done a dive on Cleburne? I'm really interested in seeing what you could do with him. My favorite of the war.

Sir! My teacher truly you have brought history back to life. I would love to meet you in person. I await your next biography ( Thomas, hint, hint) . But all ribbing aside anyone you choose it will be over the top. Thank you.

Man, that's something. Hancock was really trying to spare Surratt's life, but couldn't. He was doing his duty as a soldier. Her death was unjust. Revenge for the death of Lincoln.

I liked the idea of the Union putting together a corps full of 2 year veterans under Hancock's command. It would have been very beneficial for the Army of the Potomac fighting alongside old comrades and for Hancock, who fought recent battles using green, cowardly recruits. It was too bad about Surrat, although Hancock did do his duty in the end, the fact that he tried to save her life speaks of his moral character. As for the Civil War, I'm glad he fought it when he was in his prime; shows just how good of a commander he was. Can't wait to see how he does against the Indians.

Oh boy... I hope we go further and talk about his war against the Cheyenne in Kansas.

I would also add that at the execution, it was Hancock's clap that was the signal for the gallows's supports to be removed.

Are you gonna cover his presidential run? This episode didn’t sound like a finale

Hancock is an interesting guy for sure, but he didn't think too highly of USCTs..
