I guess I have never noticed that there is not parking for East Cemetery Hill, but I always do a lot of walking when at the battlefield and I always spend some time here with General Hancock and the other monuments. Walking the battlefield gives you a real feel for the terrain, and it also makes a cold beer taste extra good in one of the many fine taverns in town! 🍺

Hancock was one of the truly remarkable individuals of his day, circulating successfully in the most complex and important forums of the times. Hancock would remain Meade's most trusted subordinate for the remainder of Hancock's service with the Army of the Potomac. Not only Meade's most trusted subordinate in the field, when "Old Snapping Turtle" would become frustrated with events during the day, he would repair to Hancock's tent to let off steam, per Theodore Lyman of Meade's staff. Another example of the strength of his reputation and leadership skills: Hancock chaired the 1879 - 1880 military panel investigating the removal of G. K. Warren at the Battle of Five Forks. The panel was directly challenging the war-time decision of Phil Sheridan, another civil war icon with post-war senior army commands.

General John B Gordon and confederates called him Thunderbolt of the Potomac, another of his nicknames besides the superb

It's too bad that the NPS didn't purchase some of the parking lot adjacent to East Cemetery Hill. Even with the new tour center there, there always seems to be some extra parking spaces there.

Tim, I think you mean McClellan labelled him "Hancock the Superb"...

“Hancock the Supreme” reminds me of “Beef Supreme” from the film Idiocracy!
