Winfield Scott Hancock, one of the more prominent Civil War Generals, doesn't get much attention outside of Gettysburg. This is the first part of a multi-part series highlighting the Pennsylvania native and discusses Hancock's early years and his time at West Point when he got to meet his namesake, General Winfield Scott.

The house he was born in is still there. I grew up in the area and the street my elementary school was on was Hancock Road, yet they never taught us this.

I'd never thought of it until the quote from Grant, but I think the answer to the question: who was the best Union general to never exercise independent command, is clearly W.S. Hancock. A case could be made that he was the best in that category on either side, although that's a bit more debatable, and the qualifier of "infantry general" probably has to be added in that case, depending upon how one defines "independent command." Also, I an argument could be made that there were some equal or superior division commanders (Patrick Cleburne comes to mind), but by nature, a smaller command meant smaller responsibilities and pressures. In any case, during the period following Gettysburg, when the I Corps, who were considered the army's best troops, essentially ceased to exist, to the end of the Wilderness campaign, when own its veterans were decimated and replaced by bounty men and conscripts, the II Corps was widely recognized as the most reliable and hardest fighting corps in the Army of the Potomac. And that was due in large part to Hancock's leadership.

I grew up near West Point. I spent quite a bit of time there. In the early eighties I attended soccer camp at West Point for two summers. I was twelve and thirteen. The first year I attended my cousin Joe was a senior cadet. He graduated Class of '83, and retired a full colonel with the 82nd airborne. He took me to places around campus off limits to tourists and civilians. It was amazing. When I see the paintings in this video of what it looked like in the early 19th century I know exactly where each painting took place.
Anyway, I recommend anyone interested in military history to visit there. It's a great vacation area. You have the beautiful town of Highland Falls as well as the famous Bear Mountain nearby. New York City is only an hour south if you take the Palisades Parkway.

Very Good series and contribution.
Our history must be presented and discussed so as never to be forgotten. Factual and unbiased presentation.
John Gibbon leaps to my mind as an under rated commander. It was he who repulsed Pickett's Charge....my guide at Gburg referred to it as "Gibbon's indeed it was. Gibbon later received a Corps command.

He’s my favorites too. You don’t hear much about him outside of Gettysburg.

This is fascinating, love history! Particularly this era of the great experiment of the American Constitution.

he's my favorite general in Gettysburg because he saves the day in Pickett's charge, and also the confederate attack on Emmitsburg road.

Glad to see some justice being to my perception of Hancock. In all of the videos and all the material I have read, while Hancock is usually not praised directions, his actions speak for themselves and I've wondered for a long time why he was not given command of an army earlier in the war instead of Burnside f.x.

I have been looking forward to this video since the completion of the Leonidas Polk series. I love how you're doing these videos. You're breaking the lives of these men into chapters that leave the viewer wanting more.

The joke going around the Civil War sites is that Winfield Scott Hancock was known as Hancock the Superb...his twin brother Hilary was Hancock the Adequate.
I've read that, like Phil Sheridan, Hancock could swear for a great length of time without repeating a phrase.

Great Job, I was wondering if you ever considered doing a series on Major General Bryan Grimes?
