If I'd gotten through the Somme, the first thing I'd want to do is invent another planet from the one I was in. I can entirely grasp his motivation.

The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales.... so many things to read and reread for Middle Earth, love every word of JRRT and Christopher Tolkien (CT) legacy, even the new Tales (2020 onwards) ... A brilliant legacy for both Tolkien's. There is still a lot more to come. Thanks for this short article. 🤓📖📘🖊️

It still amazes me that after witnessing some of the most brutal things a young man could see during the war, tolkien managed to create one of if not the best fantasy series of all time and made such a beutiful world for children and adults alike

I am so thankful, Christopher didn’t go the Brian Herbert route and wrote pulpy novel after pulpy novel supposedly based on his father’s notes in order to cash in. He went through the laborious process of transcribing all of his manuscripts into a twelve volume stuffy scholastic analysis… but he gave us the ability to actually see what Tolkien wrote and to peak over his shoulder to accompany him on his lifelong journeys through the legendarium. A true labour of love. Reading JRRT‘s letters to CJRT in 1944 also moves me deeply as in every word you can feel the deep connection between the two.
This is a truly pure work, uncompromised, no commercial interests… not primarily anyway. That’s why I love the legendarium so much.

There is also an interview in which Tolkien explains how he came up with the Hobbit I believe it is, if I remember correctly it was grading papers

I will not read the history of Middle Earth, but I'm happy someone took the time and worked through them to publish them for the lovers of Tolkien's work.

This wonderful young man is an enemy to the modern day system of dumbing down our children. Reading increases your intellect and wisdom. 😊

JRRT was saved from almost certain death by catching Trench Fever, which is spread by lice! It took him years to recover.
This after he 'endured the obloquy' of staying at Oxford to complete his degree before enlisting.

I am always surprised about how accurately he would put history and add his own fantasy touch to it and make something new.

Fun fact: the battle of Somme was the battle that Anne Frank’s father, Tolkien, AND Adolf hitler all fought
