Why Does Russia own this Old Piece of German Land? #shorts

This piece of land, called the Kaliningrad Oblast, is separated from the Russian mainland by more than 350 kilometers. This means that almost 1 million Russians are separated from the Russian mainland by the countries of Lithuania, Latvia, and Belarus. To understand how Russia got this land in the first place, we have to go back to the end of the second world war.

At this time, Germany owned this piece of land, which at the time was called East Prussia. As the Soviet army was closing in, around 2 million of the Germans living in East Prussia had to flee back to the mainland.

After Germany lost the war, East Prussia, as well as some other territories, were taken from Germany. East Prussia was split between Poland, and the Soviet Union. The upper part was given to the Lithuanian Soviet Republic, and this middle section was given to the Russian Soviet Republic. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Kaliningrad remained a part of Russia, as it still is to this day.

Fun fact: During Soviet time russia wanted to give Kaliningrad oblast to Lithuania several times. Lithuanian government declined the offers because they didn’t want to get a large russian minority in their country in the future.

Russia: annexes Crimea and says that's because it historically was Russian land

Very impressed that you noted how Memel was returned to Lithuania from East Prussia after the war. A lot of mapping channels miss details like that. Can't wait to see where your channel goes!

As a note, your 1935 map depicts Germany as having retaken Memel, which, at the time, they had not done.

And also something more.

Kaliningrad was offered to the Lithuanian SSR, but they refused because of how much it would affect the demographics.

If I remember correctly, Khrushchev was about to offer that the Russian SFSR will give Kaliningrad to Lithuanian SSR but Lithuanian SSR refused as there were more Russians than Lithuanians in Kaliningrad, I might be wrong though so please reply with certain corrections, thanks

The Soviet Union took Kalingrad because of the former German naval base (formerly Konigsberg) so they would have direct access to the Baltic Sea after the war.
