I remember when Gigi called Yolanda crying that she was ill and felt faint and Yolanda told her to eat a couple of almonds. Gave me Devil Wears Prada "I don't eat anything till I nearly faint when I eat a cube of cheese" vibes.

Yolanda is literally insane. She fed her daughter a half of a half of a half of a piece of cake. That's what starts eating disorders...

I've had an eating disorder for over a decade. Now that I'm pregnant, something clicked in my head and now I'm eating balanced meals whenever I am hungry. There's no more fear in weight gain because this isn't just about me anymore. I want to raise an intuitive eater and I appreciate this video so much!

No wonder Bella developed an eating disorder (she had a whole Tumblr account dedicated to her eating disorder, you can google it). Her mother literally set disordered eating and skewed body goals as an example and imposed it on her kids. On top of that Bella also had to deal with Gigi being favoured as the golden child by her mom.
It's also no wonder that Yolanda clearly struggles with food and body image having been a model in the 90s/2000s era. Still not an excuse to treat her children this way.

“Mom I wanna play volleyball “
Yolanda: my daughter is a lesbian 👁👄👁

I know someone who went to school with Gigi and said she was a really talented volleyball player so it’s really sad to see that this was the kind of narrative she got at home about it

Gigi actually helped zayn with his ED, I’m so glad that she seems like she has a good view of food

My in-laws found it so weird that I told them they’re not allowed to talk about how ‘fat’ they are or about their diets and losing weight in front of my daughter. One told me with a straight face ‘its the reality of being a woman?’. So I told them I don’t want a life for my daughter where she’s never satisfied with her body and perpetually on a diet, living from one ‘cheat meal’ to the next. They completely disregarded this and it went as far as me telling them if they keep talking to her about it I will not allow them to see her without me present. I struggled for so long to have a healthy relationship with food and love my body, and I don’t want that for her.

I’m sorry but Yolanda’s relationship with food is just horrible and she pours it down her daughter’s throat. It makes me angry and it makes me sad. Wow.

I love this ayurvedic saying 'you are what you digest', which also considers the emotions and thoughts that we digest as well as the foods, like nourishing your body is mental, physical, emotional etc. I know ayurveda may not exactly be 100% compatible with intuitive eating, but I think this framing of digestion does align with IE.

The lemon water thing most definitely didn’t start with her. I had a “detox diet” book in the early 2000s that had you drinking lemon and cayenne pepper water every morning. This has been a thing for ages.

I'm tired about the stereotype that mothers teach ED to their children because fathers can do too. My mother has never pressured me to eat a certain way. She is a great cooker, balanced meals are so delicious.
But the one who pressures me and my sister to lose weight and makes us feel never enough and never pretty enough is my father.
At 24 I understand that he is projecting an ideal beauty type on us that we can not reach. Even at a normal BMI now we are curvy, even if we would starve we'll still have curves. And I love my curves so not my problem anymore.

Yolanda sort of reminds me of my mum. She's always commented on my body. Like I remember when I was 6 years old and I was throwing up from being sick and she said that my tummy "looks like what all the 16 year-old girls want" because it was flat from basically being empty. Also when I was going through puberty at 12 she said that my thighs are too big. I was 12!!! There was so many other comments as well and they all definitely contributed to me developing an ED. My stepdad didn't help later on when he kept calling me fat when I was severely underweight!! I cut them out of my life and completely recovered now thanks to my boyfriend and his family though so that's good :)

I had a conversation with my mother recently where she said “no one should ever stop watching what they eat because we’re all only a few mistakes away from becoming obese” and “yeah, technically you’d still be a healthy BMI if you gained 30 lbs, but you’d feel awful in your body” and it hit me that all my disordered eating is probably learned from her.

Yolanda reminds me so much of my grandmother. When I was in elementary school she made me workout every night before bed and heavily controlled my diet. She would even check the school menu for the day so she could tell me which things on my tray she didn’t want me to eat. I was underweight my whole childhood until I was 16.

I feel like the way in which Yolanda speaks about food is in part driven by her life long battle with Lyme. I had a parent with a chronic disease that drove them to be hyper focused on organic/superfoods. Wellness culture is one thing but fears around food/toxicity are exacerbated by struggles with chronic disease.

The voice of REASON in this crazy nutrition/diet world we live in today. Thank you, Abbey, for speaking some sense into this world.

The “you are what you eat” mantra is actually extremely harmful to people with chronic illnesses. Nowadays many people assume that you only get any kind of disease or condition if you’re not eating “healthy” enough or don’t work out enough. And it’s so frustrating to battle a chronic illness and then have to hear bs like that.

Cutting Yolanda some slack because she’s a mom is strange. She doesn’t work, she lives off of her ex husbands’ money and all of her kids are adults.

I'm not defending Yolanda for probably giving her daughter an eating disorder. However, let's also remember that she was a model as well, and this way of thinking that she is passing on to her children is all likely an result of her own experiences with restriction in the modeling industry and someone controlling her diet/giving her bad advice as well.

Edit: Also another point to add. Just because your parents might do everything to raise you to be intuitive, healthy eaters with a great food relationship doesn't mean it'll happen. But that's the scary part about raising kids in general isn't it? My mom followed all of the gentle nutrition tips and teaching us how to be good eaters, and out of the four of us (2 boys and 2 girls), I'm the only one that struggles with disordered eating. My younger sister almost did, but she wised up pretty fast. To say I'm envious is an understatement.

WHY do people think lemon water alkalises? They’re full of citric *acid*
Also homeostasis doesn’t work like that pls
