I am pushing 50 and in perimenopause and sleep isn't easy or natural for me. What I've started doing is giving myself 8 solid hours of "sleeportunity" each night. I lie quietly in darkness, I use an eye cover, and if sleep doesn't happen then I lie quietly thinking pleasant thoughts. Dr. Andrew Huberman suggested during one of his podcasts that regeneration of certain neurotransmitters or hormones may be triggered by phases of extended darkness, not by sleep itself. For several months I've been following a standard bedtime with 8 hours of lying in darkness, and I feel great. I now believe that the traditional advice "get up and do something else if you can't sleep" is terrible advice. Perhaps I'm still missing out on the optimum amount of deep sleep, but if my brain wants to sleep I'm giving it the opportunity. It's straightforward and doesn't cost anything and I plan to continue to spend 8 hours a night this way for the long term.

Due to my profession, I had irregular sleep in the past. My father just past away due to Alzheimer. I tend to snore.. This once again reminds me to do even more to prevent Alzheimer in the future.

I have a method I have used for many years to achieve deep restorative Delta sleep states for myself. I use binaural acoustic tones and modulated pink noise to cause neural entrainment to lower my neural EEG frequencies down to the restorative DELTA states where the Glymphatic system is activated. I have been using this method since the mid 1990's using a very outdated program ("cool edit") which is now part of adobe audition.
My P.h.D. is in Computer Engineering, so by no means can I claim to be an expert in this subject nor have I published any peer-reviewed studies on this subject. My subjective observations however would indicate that actively modulation of neural frequencies via external entrainment utilizing binaural modulation could have great promise.

Cannabis has been shown to decrease REM sleep and increase deep sleep; perhaps it might be beneficial, especially for seniors, to partake a couple hours before bed (to minimize the decrease in REM sleep while retaining a higher duration of deep sleep)

True. My husband was first diagnosed with central sleep apnea then young-onset Alzheimer's.
