The Hidden Connection Between Sleep and Dementia

New research has identified associations between poor sleep and increased risk for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. More than 2,800 older adults participated in the study. They completed questionnaires about their sleep quality, including how long it took them to fall asleep, how long they slept, and whether they snored. The study investigators collected information about the participants' cognitive health or if they died from any cause during a period of five years after completion of the questionnaires.

The findings revealed that participants who reported getting fewer than five hours of sleep per night were twice as likely to develop dementia compared to those who had seven to eight hours of sleep per night. Taking a long time to fall asleep (more than 30 minutes) increased the risk of dementia 45 percent. The authors also found that getting fewer than five hours of sleep per night, having daytime sleepiness, and taking regular naps increased the risk of all causes of premature death.

This scares the crap out of me. I've never had a good relationship with sleep.

Her T-shirt logo is the best ....What a CLEVER thought.
This topic about sleep disorder can be linked to a hypochondriac...People who worry too much about all then cannot sleep....and fatigue sets in...
Yet...her T-shirt says ...mitochondriac....which suggests ample energy ( from our mitochondria in our cells )
SUCH a clever message in disguise...Well done Rhonda..
I bet your smoothies are creating your energy for life and good sleep.
We can all sleep better now...

Thanks doc... My mother had Alzheimers, and I remember that before it struck, she had major sleep issues. She slept on the couch so that if she awoke, she could get busy in the house. She wasn't obese, and was quite socially active, had many hobbies.

In many ways, I'm like her. I'm now 70, and have been having sleep issues for decades. Occassionally, I will sleep 7 to 8 hours a night. Mostly, I awaken after 6 hours... and my brain is too busy to get back to sleep. I do what I can to relax, and get a couple more hours... but nothing beats sleeping 8 hours, straight through.

I'm a health enthusiast, work out, take recommended supplements, and read a lot about all my concerns.

I may be wrong but I I've deduced that I have anxiety, brought on by PTSD from being homeless for 2 years, 20 years ago (very stressful).

Something inside of me is worried like I was still homeless... and I'd bet my cortisol cycles are not normal. When I awaken after 6 hours, I'm ready to go... therefore, it is difficult to calm down. I do nap during the day, but not when I get a full 8 hours straight.

I did quit regular coffee last year because of the anxiety. Simultaneously, my chronic depression disappeared... but anxiety is still always there.

I do fear going my mother's way... it wasn't pretty.

I bring my anxiety up with my health care pro, she shows concern, but no arrangements are made to get treatment. I know the medical system in the USA doesn't respond well, or thoroughly to psychiatric issues.

My neighbor gives me samples of sleep inducing tea. As I was writing this, she dropped off the latest one.... que Twilight Zone theme...

If you could give me a brief reply, I would be so grateful. Love your channel.

Great, this creates even more anxiety and stress for those of us with severe insomnia.😢

Not everyone has control over sleep. It is not like deciding to take a walk. It is largely outside of your control.

This is so true. I had brain fog to the point where I was deeply concerned: I realized that after being self employed for decades and now working a day job I had only been sleeping 5 hours vs 8 for the 20 years prior. I took a real effort to sleep 7-9 hours. Wow. Like. WOW. Vivid dreams, more accurate word recall, amazing function increase. Get more SLEEP!!

...well that’s terrifying. I’m glad that I’m combating some of the plaque buildup with exercise but I need to be more proactive with my sleep. Then you.

Thanks for this and your other podcasts. I listened to your past interview on sleep and used the suggestions . Worked great. Up to 6 hours straight sleep and can quickly get back to sleep for another hour or two

I can't tell you how seriously I've worked to get good sleep. I've always exercised but was overdoing it! Starting a serious vitamin, mineral and neurotransmitters regiment got me into the 7-9 hours. The best sleep has dreams.
