In watching all these reviews, I've been surprised that Sixties rock musicians seemed to have known almost everybody--even people that were completely outside of their genre. Like when Gary Brooker said he really like Neil Diamond, that he toured with the Eagles and liked them. It seems that rock musicians had much broader tastes than their fans.

Personally I'm more of a Humble Pie kind of guy, but I Small Faces! Steve was the greatest rock singer of the 60s. I don't care what anybody says. Nobody was as soulful as him.

Marriott's observations are shrewd, eloquent and sometimes prescient. But he's probably the only music fan in the world who'd mistake The Doors for The Lovin' Spoonful.

Steve, sadly was a bit like Keith Moon, his own worst enemy. That aside, one of my favourite musicians. He could play fantastic guitar, sing & produce nuclear energy. His performances were frenetic & truly brilliant. RIP.

He was very charitable. It is to my great regret that I failed to appreciate him at the time. If it were not for YouTube he would still be a relatively minor pop singer from the Sixties to me. Now I know better.
