Why The Small Faces Were The Unluckiest Band In History

The truth behind the wonderful Small Faces, featuring Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane and more!

The Small Faces were an iconic 1960s British band who had more than their fair share of hits at home (including Itchycoo Park, All or Nothing, and Lazy Sunday Afternoon) but a huge dollop of bad luck. The Curse of the Small Faces is sometimes discussed by friends and fans of the band behind closed doors.

Collectively, Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane, Jimmy Winston (who left early on to be replaced by…) Ian McLagan, and Kenney Jones were The Small Faces: one of the five top British bands of the 1960s. Sadly, they were the only one of the five who couldn't find international fame and fortune. Let me tell you why and why everything seemed to go wrong …

I've only bumped into famous people twice in my life, and both times it was Kenney Jones. The 2nd time was finding myself stood next to him on the shuttle bus going to the car park at Gatwick Airport, and I knew who he was then. The first time, I had no idea who he was, which was a little unfortunate as was talking to me in a pub, with him very drunk, and after talking a bit, he asked me to guess who he was. Given that at the time I'd never heard of him, and would definitely not have recognised him, that was tough. Eventually, after realising I genuinely had no idea, he just blurted out "I used to be the drummer in The Who!"

Urban legend says The SFs didn't get paid much from both labels. Despite they recorded all the time ( individual members did sessions for others. Marriot and Lane had written alot for others) Thanx!

How can you say that The Small Faces "were too British?"....they had so much soul and were so based in R 'n' B/ soul....it was the chirpy Cockney Marriott who came up with Lazy Sunday, The Universal etc...but, listen to The Faces without Marriott and they could have been a soul band. Don't get me wrong. Marriott was a superb singer and front man both bands were excellent .
