Conservatives = Conservatives
NDP = Labour
Bloc Québécois = SNP
Green = Green

The fact that the Conservative party is pro oil is enough to make Alberta conservative. Oil is the life blood of us Albertans.

You really should reconsider two major points: 1) the notion that the Federal Liberals are actually taking climate change seriously, and 2) the idea that the NDP is urban - look at how rural and northern most of their seats are....

Ironically, the NDP's greatest accomplishment for Canada — the establishment of your Medicare system — involved their government in Saskatchewan busting up a strike by the doctors.

For me it's weird to imagine a political system, in which you only have three real options. Here in Germany we've got the big cheeses:

- The Christian Democrats (centre-right, mildly conservative)
- The Social Democrats (centre-left)
- The Greens (green, humanitarian)
- The Free Democrats (centre-right liberals, all for market deregulation)
- The Left (leftist)
- The Alternative for Germany (rightwing extremism, nationalism, populism)

And minor but sometimes relevant players like:
- The Ecologicals (conservative, green)
- The Pirates (big on anonymity, tech)
- NPD (nazis)

I guess that voting over here is a lot harder, because nobody quite knows how to label themselves. It's not one or the other really. All of them are fairly valid options. Also, all parties know that they could die any minute now, if they fail to convince the people. The Canadian parties probably never feel that way, right? They're pretty secure in their positions.

I assume the "Tory" thing comes from the fact that in Britain the Conservatives are also called Tories and that just continued over because of the close political relationship between the UK and Canada. The word Tory comes from the Irish "tóraidhe" which is the Irish word for a thief/outlaw so take from that what you will!
