In this Excel Function Explained video series, I will explain, how to use ROW function in excel. It falls under the Lookup & Reference category. The ROW function will give you which row you are in. Let’s say you are in cell C3, if you use the row function here you will get 3, because you are in row 3. Using ROW function, you’ll be able to return the row number based on which cell you are.

Let’s learn how to use ROW formula in excel.
The Function looks like this = ROW ([reference])

The ROW function has only one argument and that is optional.
1. Reference: This is where you provide a cell reference. It’s an optional argument. If you write the cell reference then the function will return row number of that reference. If you don’t place any reference, it will return the row number of the cell where you place the function.
There are a few things you need to remember when you use this function.
1. The parameter is optional here if you place a cell reverence here then it will return the row number of that cell.
2. If you don’t place the reference, it will return the row number of that cell where you have the function.
3. If you select a range then it will return the row number of the first cell of your range.

This is how we use ROW in excel. Remember, using ROW function in excel you actually tell excel formula to return the row number of the cell we specify.
