How to Automate Row numbers in Excel?

Use ROW functionality and save time while updating your plans. The Excel ROW function returns the row number for a reference. For example, ROW(C10) returns 10, since C10 is the tenth row in the spreadsheet. When no reference is provided, ROW returns the row number of the cell which contains the formula.

For those of you that have asked if the list starts at row 2 and not row 1:
If you enter “=row()-1” (without the quotations) it will work for you. You can change “-1” to whatever you need it do be to make up the difference of where the actual list starts verses the row number.

Row( )-1

I want excel to assign a unique number to each row and i want that number to NOT change if I sort my table or if I delete a row. In other words if I have 15 rows and I enter a 16th row I want Excel to auto name it serial number 16 and that serial number will stay with that row no matter if other rows are added or deleted and no mater how I sort those rows. How can I do that?
