Pipeline Welding School (HOW TO GO FOR FREE)
Austin Ross breaks down pipeline welding training. Pipeline welder certification is different than you may expect. Pipe welding schools can be a great start. My best pipe welding schools suggestions are welding tech schools (especially if they are free), Tulsa Welding School, and Kentucky Welding Institute. Many offer pipe welding courses, pipe welding certification, and pipe welding certification test, but there is a big missing puzzle piece. Experience.
So, do you get tradition pipe welding training by taking a pipeline welding course or do you really dive into pipeline welding by way of pipeline welding classes in the field. Learning how to become a pipeline welder can be tricky, but I would love to save you some time and money by skipping pipeline welding school.
Watch the video to learn how I think you can get paid welding training, specifically if you want to do pipeline welding.

Tell me your thoughts! Tradition welding school or welder helper school?

I’m a 16 year old freshman living in California, and the reason I find welding interesting is the hands on experience that is involved. I’m hoping that one day I will become a welder so that I can make good money. Right now I’m just searching all of YouTube for any research I can get from professional welders such as yourself. 👨‍🏭 👍

I learned in high school. The Tulsa recruiter came in and showed off what a TWS top student can do. He showed 2 coke cans welded butt end to butt end. Looked pretty rough but he said it was pretty difficult to do. I quietly got up and went into the shop and took 2 Mountain Dew cans from the trash, tigged them up while he was talking and took my seat. When he asked if we had any questions, I came to the front and asked “what the difference was between his ‘coupon’ and mine?” He looked puzzled and said no. I said, “this one (TWS student) took 2 years and $18K to get this quality. Mine took two semesters at a free public high school.” The Tulsa weld school people didn’t come back the next year. While that was just an arrogant kid showing off a trick, it was a real lesson to the class. Jobs I’ve been on welding as either a welder or foreman, never has a new hire showed me a transcript or certificate. Hell, just bc you’re certified doesn’t mean it’s going to count at that site. Guys that weld around the farm, in my opinion, are far better hands than trade school hands simply because in school, the practice isn’t what the job is. NEVER, in 20+ years of welding, have I ever had to join 2 plates with a perfect, clean, well fit gap and a millscale free backing strap in a 3G position set at a comfortable height. My advice, when practicing at home or school, set your part on the floor or behind something to get used to welding in weird positions and around obstacles. I.e. real life.

Went to trade school. most valuable learning experience i have ever had. i learned a huge amount about all welding processes there and now i use that knowledge everyday as a structural welder. It was the perfect fit for me but its not for everyone. Not free but a couple months roughneckin will do it. worth every penny

I would suggest being a welder helper first and foremost. Getting the experience with the welders while on pipelines is priceless. I feel I acquired some great fabricating knowledge by welder helping while working building pig launchers, compressor stations, etc. Someone is always supplying keys of knowledge out there; the more you are involved, the more keys you collect to open doors of opportunity!

I think Welding school is important because it really starts you off with the basics so you don't look as green. You have a good understanding on the fundamental characteristics of the arc and machine options. I started at the bottom after trade school but with experience you gain more knowledge. The more you know will help you with situations where it can help you break out and pass that RT test.

I didnt go to welding school. I took welding shop in my senior year in high school, after that i started as a helper in a small gates/fencing shop in central Texas. Learned from the experienced welders, got my certifications they were asking for and just took off from there. I always asked question no matter how dumb i thought they sounded. Bottom line 16 years later im still at it. Love your videos man, keep em coming!!

I'm currently in school now at Georgia Trade School. Ya I might not get all the certificates I want but it does help build experience and you come out of it knowing how to read and interpret blueprints which is also very helpful in the field.

You are a true asset to the welding / pipelines industry / trades for inspiring the next folks coming up the line, to help them, give them important information, from an experienced insider, that would otherwise be hard or impossible to attain for many....Keep up the good work, and thank you guys for what you do!

What’s up man... I absolutely love your videos man. I’m currently at Arizona attending Universal Technical Institute for welding, and with the information I’ve been getting and learned from watching your video really helps me prepare for the welding world. Pipeline is where I want to go when I’m done with school in 4 months. So thanks again bro keep up the good work and god bless

I plan on going in and getting on the job training instead of welding school. My grandfather was a certified welder and has taught me the basics since I was little so I have a lot of confidence going straight into a job without school.

Good thoughts. My son is currently at Hobart HIWT. I feel that will give him a well rounded education in welding. Currently passed his 6G test. He will have over 1300 hrs of burn time. He did two years of high school level trade school also. His future is wide open.

Southwest Technical College in Fennimore, WI is where I started my welding. Only $7000 for a full year in there night classes from January to December 5pm to 10pm. Alot of hard work going to work in the morning and school at night but it was worth it. Now I'm a field service technician working on asphalt equipment and stick welding like a champ!!

I'm going to school for welding right now. I am getting the associate degree. The main reason for the extra school is not for getting work but having a better education. It has helped me to read and write more effectively and that is why I am going that route.

Two different trade schools and a American Building and Trade school Baton Rouge La. Welded 13 years in the fab shop and plant settings. School was and I’d good but I actually learn a lot about the fab work from a pipeline welder.

I went to wldking school and got my first job--the job i have right now. And that job keeps a roof over my head. So for me it was mor than important, because I went to college to be an English teacher but wound up really disliking the public school system. Butas you said, Austin, I have gone 3 weld tests since then because I would like to make more money, but I could't pass the weld tests. I had never used the MIG wire they used, I was asked to TIG weld aluminum. and galvanized steel pipe, and one test gave me a spray transfer challenge for literally 90 Degrees vertical, and I thought my welds on that test were really good, but nope, they didn't like what I brought to the table. So, yeah, it's a giant world of welding out there and the only way to get good is to go whre you want to go and try your best. OTJ, baby.
