This was my grandpas last drop of the war

He noted when watching this that he couldn’t believe the level of detail in this

Everything from the parachutes to the arm bands they were ordered to have on was spot on and how quiet it was for them

Was like the German army didn’t exist

I think the scene where the soldier cuts a piece of silk from his parachute relates to a story where he was on a jump, and noticed that the 'chute had been packed in his home town where his mother worked in the factory that made and packed them. This he believed was an omen that his chute would work fine. He then noticed that the chute actually had his mother's initials on it, as the 'packer', giving him even greater confidence. When he landed he cut a piece of silk from the chute and after he returned home he gave it to his mother. Coincidence or fate?
Edit: The Parachute belonged to Private Robert Hillman and was manufactured, packed AND inspected at the Pioneer Parachute Company of Manchester, Connecticut. It was one of millions of parachutes manufactured, packed and shipped to Europe during the war.
Hillman survived the war so most likely jumped into Normandy and Holland. His amazing discovery was recorded by an NBC Radio correspondent who was seated in the aircraft next to him, prior to the jump.

3:06 “won’t be able to shoot as straight with that thing on”
I was pleased to hear that is ballistically true. It disrupts the flow around the projectile and decreases accuracy.

A perfect day for an airborne drop and everyone came down exactly where they needed to be and with all their equipment too.

Market Garden had some of the most successful drops and ended up to be one of the most catastrophic operations of the war. Ironic.

Bull is what we call the big soft bear. Strong and big, but cares for the little guys.

Orange is the national colour of the Netherlands. It goes back to our 'Father of the Fatherland', William of Nassau, who inherited the principality of Orange (Now in present day France) in 1544 as a child. He was the leader of the Dutch revolution against the Spanish who occupied Dutch (and nowadays Belgian) territories. The title prince/princess of Orange is still used by the successor of the crown in our royal house Orange-Nassau. The lady at the end uses the orange to make sure her home is not attacked by our liberators.

Our uncle dropped on this same day, except he was with the 82nd Airborne Division. Many weeks later he was wounded in action and died the first week of November.

In the Airborne, this is what we call a MTCE Jump; Mass Tactical - Combat Equipment. Did 3 of those during my time @ Bragg, & can say nothing more nerve wracking than being the #1 jumper & seeing 4 C-17s seconds away from dropping 400 Paras on Sicily DZ. Can’t imagine what it was like for these guys jumping from 50+ planes into bad guy land. My kudos to these men.

Events in Arnhem, the Hurtgenwald, and the Scheldt Delta negated the short lived success of Operation Market Garden

Man, they just set up this scene so perfectly...the pan to the paratroopers falling through partly sunny skies coupled with the orchestra playing that pretty, but somewhat unsettling music just nails the feel of over-optimism that the planners had to end the war by Christmas

'In the aftermath of World War II, more than 300, 000 Dutch people were investigated as collaborators, from men who volunteered for the German army to those accused of betraying resisters and Jews, who were often arrested or sent to their deaths.'

So beautifully filmed, and excellent music… that feeling of the end of Summer and the turning of a season and the melancholy of knowing that the war is far, far from ending.

This is such a great series. One of my favourite WWII movies.

On the other side of the city center lies the now called 18 September square, where every year on the 18th a parade of old equipment and torchbearers walks through the city towards the town hall, where it appears the street scene took place. As the years have gone by fewer and fewer veterans have been able to attend, but that is life I guess.

They were still using that quick release parachute harness when I went through Jump School in 1979. It was a terrible harness. If you were wearing boxers instead of briefs and were well endowed, if your penis got under one of those leg straps when your chute deployed, it was pure agony until you hit the ground. The pain was intolerable! They got rid of that damn parachute harness in the early 1980s.

Back in D-Day they had the T5 chute and harness which was fastened with hooks and buckles. 1:05 here they used the British chute which can be released by a single buckle.

The German chute was much worse. It could not steer, flare and there was no quick release of any kind.
