If one understands that reflux disease is an abnormal exposure of the esophagus to increased acid. The longterm effects of that acid exposure can cause changes in the lining of the esophagus. And, certainly, if you are on medicine that decreases the acid that will halt, or allow it to start to heal. But as the longterm effects (as you understand) once you stop the medication then that acid exposure can return.
