I'm very strict on working less than 40 hours. I've had people end interviews just because I won't budge on this. I'm currently working 32 hours over the span of five days and tbh, I'd lose my mind if I had to do 40 again

People who work themselves to death looks like death. Not happening to me ever again!

I've worked in corporate America going on 15 years now. it has completely eviscerated my work ethic. I used to be the hardest working, most conscientious contributor to any team I was a part of but now I log in and put in the bare minimum because honestly, I get nothing in return for my effort except a reminder every year that this measly 5% raise is really ALL they could do.... I want out.

People believe that working less hours is a sign of weakness. I believe the opposite.

If you have to commute, like so many do, and I used to, then 40 hours a week is ALL of your useful time. Your time at home is exhausted useless time, just enough time to turn around and go back. It’s soul crushing.

3 to 5 hours a week is all I put into work when remote. Every time I go into the office it's full of people doing everything but work, or they are on the same project for the past 3-4 months for basic stuff. There is zero reason to work 40 hours. Do what it takes to get the job done and be done. No office politics. No brown nosing. No BSing with coworkers.

In my case, I get to spend more time with family and entrepreneurial pursuits. As mentioned in the video, use the time for what you want to do. Life is too short to do otherwise.

This is a big reason why remote work is gaining so much traction. People are getting just as much done in 5-6 hours as they were in 8 hours in-office.

they call it a 40 hour work week but you may as well call it a 120 hour work week since 24 hours in a day times that by 5 ( 24x5=120) since you're not going to have any life expect for the 48 hours called the weekend

I decided to work 32 hours a week and got laid off. I needed a day of rest ( physical and mental), a day of home projects, and a day to honor a God. In 25 years of working, I've never had a paid day off. America is upside down.

I went to a three day week (21-24 hours) as a (Senior level) software engineer when I was 30. Permanent employee, not contractor. That was 13 years ago and have moved jobs in that time, and had promotions. They basically trust me with full autonomy for the majority of my work to do what is worthwhile.

Best thing I ever did - happier, do better quality work, and it’s a win-win for the company too and I don’t waste nearly as much energy on small stuff. Because of that, I’m now paid what the average engineer in my role would get full time too as the company also sees the value they get out of me as worth it. And yeah, so maybe 12 hours of deep work - but very intense and in a very relaxed way.

The 2 days extra I get to not work is my ‘pay premium’ 😂

I could definitely get my entire week of work done in 2 to 3 days of focused work. But in my boss's eyes, that just means he can bring on more work for me to do. Because he wants me to be at the office for optics more than anything else. So I half-ass my work for 5 days.

Right now I’m saving $$$ every week and building up a nest egg. I’m looking at passive streams of income that hopefully one day will take off into something much larger. I’d love to just work part time and have those passive incomes and eventually work for no one again. I am so sick of every Sunday night dreading what’s coming. We’re not meant to live this way

I'm a software engineer and I agree with your opinion. Currently, many Asian countries are also working more than 40 hours a week. I think it's okay for a short period, but it's not good if it lasts long.

Imagine working 50 ✨MANDATORY✨ hours per week! Resigned two weeks ago and never looking back. No way that hell will continue to be my story.

Work 40 hours a week making 35 to 60 grand a year is the vast norm. Owning your own home by the time you are 65 or older seems to be about average. That's a long grind to own a house. If you even live that long.
