When people talk about cities, what they like, what they don’t, for the most part it’s in the eye of the beholder. For imperceptible reasons, some cities’ vibes match with some people more than others. Think about what you would say is your favourite city - you could do your best to describe the place, the people that live there, the energy, the landmarks, but the conclusion might well be that for whatever these characteristics are, for you the place feels like home.

So first impression?

First of all it must be said where many Chinese cities are widely considered to be dime-a-dozen and largely interchangeable, Chengdu has retained a particular character.

I am Canadian and I had the glory of living 10 years in Chengdu. In my life, I have visited more than 30 countries and I have lived in 3 Continents. Every time I think of Chengdu I tell myself Chengdu is the most incredible city I have ever lived. It's people, architecture, gastronomy, culture, and most of all how easy it is to live and fall in love with Chengdu. I miss Chengdu every day and I can say that I lived the best years of my life in love with the city where I lived.

I think you said it right. You have to grow into the city. I guessed that's what I have to do whether I like it or not as ChengDu will be "home" for the next 4 years.

I lived in South Korea and I heard from people that China is big. But be careful of some taxi drivers from my experience in Guangzhou back on August 30, 2015 the driver pulled up to the hotel where I stayed for one night. He did not want 20 dollars U.S. and he was yelling at me for five minutes then the Chinese police officer felt the bill and gave it to him. Case solved! I was flying back to Vancouver, B.C. and there were no flights from Korea to Japan that I wanted. It was an eye opener for me for coming to China. In Korea or Japan they like American money, but in China they like their Yuan the most. Now you understand why China competes against the USA.

"guy capital of China"? That is insulting and labeling Chengdu the capital city of Sichuan.
