I work in Unemployment, and my biggest tip I have for ANYONE applying is to always apply the day after you get laid off/fired and not the same day. Most states will straight out deny you if they notice your last day worked is the same as your applied date cause technically you were still employed THAT day. Save yourself the nightmare of appealing for a very annoying technicality.

Y’all, please file an appeal if you are denied. You gotta learn your rights and win for yourself. ❤

Don't we pay unemployment taxes when working? So isn't it just our money we getting back? Seems like government always trying to screw you. Like pushing social security older and older.

It's so weird that your taxed with unemployment.. its like the government handing you 2 pairs of socks and just before they walk away, they turn back and say "WAIT! I gave you too many socks, I need one of them back" like why don't they just take what they need BEFORE giving it to me? I mean school already didn't teach me jack about how to actually do taxes, it's almost as if the system is trying to set me up to make a mistake somewhere and be criminalized for it.

I once got denied unemployment because my employers paid me a severance. The "severance" they were referring to was my former employer paying out my unused PTO.

My experience with unemployment:
1) Apply IMMEDIATELY. You paid for it - unemployment insurance came out of your paycheck - so don't dither about it being "welfare". There's a delay to it being approved, and that can cost you.
2) Expect to be audited every time. That may not be everywhere, but every time I've been getting UI the "occasional" request to prove I was looking for work was "every single week, no exceptions".

And Some states require you submit three Work Search Activities a week to continue collecting. I am doing that right now.

Sometimes looking for work is like a full-time job on its own.

A really good trick if you're doing an unemployment hearing and you're an attorney and you ask the employer if they will take your client back to work. If they say no then unemployment is guaranteed pretty much. Unless they were fired for some serious cause.

Here in AZ if they cut your hrs (cuz they want you to quit so you cant get UE) you can collect partial UE.
So keep your shorter hrs & collect & enjoy your extra time off with pay.

The part that pisses me off or I dont understand is that they demand 2 fields to be filled out that arent relevant in 2024... My state (VA) requires that I provide :
4. First and last name and title of the individual for the employer/company with whom you spoke;
5. Telephone number of the company contacted or email address;
does that anymore! Everybody just sighs, stares at you for a second, and says "all our hiring is done online"...

And if DES advises you of a job and sets you up with an interview, ATTEND. Even if there's no chance you'll be hired, go. You can loose benefits and be barred from ever getting them again. Plus, having a menial job means you are employable and may make getting the next job easier.

It's time the politicians and the richest were accountable for their tax evasion.

Being laid off is a slam dunk they wont even interview. Quitting and receiving unemployment is the tricky part.

Why do we need to jump thru hoops for money that is ours. I Have 60, 000 in my unemployment that I won't get back after retirement.

I had to fill out forms on their janky website proving I applied for like 5 jobs every week and if I had an interview. It took a lot of time away from actually applying for jobs.

I quit my job because my supervisor wouldn’t approve of my request to attend my sibling’s wedding and I was a part of the wedding party. I appealed and the judge said the wedding wasn’t “serious enough” of a reason to quit a job. The judge was basically saying it’s better that I had been dismissed/terminated for going to the wedding since my supervisor denied my request to use PTO. So then what? I apply for UE and get denied since how it’s in my record that I was terminated for not showing up to work. Jeesh. These laws are so messed up.

You can literally name any business in your area and make up names, it’s a giant Bureaucratic web that no one will “audit”, I’ve had tons of friends do this over the years and it’s always been fine.
