1.Start a project
2.Keep making it for a year
3.Realize it's too big and it will take at least another year+
4.Don't budge on making scope smaller
5.Decide to make another much smaller game using gained experience
6.Nothing fits and you hate it because this game is a compromise
7. Go back to main project and find gamebreaking bug, where you have to start over very long bit
8. Now have 2 games that are crumbling
9.Cry internally, make bubbles because they're relaxing and proceed, because you love this game and need funds for programs and equipment

Always start with the scope...
Small game is 1 or 2 mechanics. Further it grows exponentially. And gosh it's hard to scope at first, when you want everything.
It's interesting to hear that anything can be made in smaller scope.

Any large project, whether thats a video game, a novel, or gadget... building the first 90% is the easy part. That last 10% requires 90% of the effort.
