Making Your First Game: Basics - How To Start Your Game Development - Extra Credits

Making your first game can be difficult. Remember that your goal is to make a game, any game. Start small, focus on basic gameplay, and pick a project you can finish. That way, you can actually complete a playable game instead of getting stuck on the details as so many first time game makers do.

Alright, this is it. I'm going to try and make my first game. Just came back here to refresh myself.

Wish me luck, if anyone's still watching this after so many year's.

A little tiny hint I have - Do not be afraid to be a copycat. Don't expect yourself to be able to invent a whole new moustrap and never resort to ideas you did not invent, but rather saw in other games.

If you see an idea and you think it will fit into your game - grab it. You'll tweak it along the way later and probably make it different. Maybe even better than it was where you saw it. Don't let ideas like "I'm not going to do it this way, because *** does it already" stop you.

Fourteen years old, and I wanted to make games for a living as long as I can remember.
Time to start my dream!

Watching this actually made me reconcider my way of tackling game development. I've been wanting to get into it for so long and I've so many ideas I want to put in, but now I realise that if I want to get into the industries, I shouldn't look to make some sort of behemoth of a game. Like you said; Keep it simple. I will take that to heart.

So I watched this video 4 years ago and I've come back to it numerous times in the middle of developing something, before starting something new, or just as a reminder to be proud of my work. I've now been making games for 4 years and I started with just some basic programming skills and now I can program, 3D model, draw 2D sprites and textures, and make my own game music and sound effects. Thank you for making this video <3

I was in a struggle and nearly lost my way after roughly one week into coding
This video helped me see the flaws in my journey and gave me a clearer, more realistic direction
Thank you so much

Want to make your own game? Let's talk about where to start! #ExtraCredits

Special thanks to the folks at Unity for sponsoring this four-part series on game development!

Tip: When you feel like you're going nowhere, maybe redo the entire game from scratch, and just start over. It might feel terrible abandoning a year of work, but you'll get to that level again WAY faster. It really helps.

So basically the scope is like art: don't think you will make great things instantly, and most importantly, practice, practice, practice, and practice will help you make better things that people will actually like.

That was a really genuine, motivating video that remained honest to the reality of everything. I just started learning to code/program less than 48 hours ago and, honestly, I needed this. Lol Thanks!

Usually tutorials like this give pointless or obvious tips but this is genuinely good advice and helpful

This will no doubt get buried, but i LOVE that there are so many people who put their first games in the comments. it's both motivating for those guys, because the audiance here is actually nice and supportive, and it motivates others to try themselves. there are too many greedy corporations in all forms of entertainment, and the games industry is one of the easiest to enter, since all you need is a half-decent computer.
