3 Ways to Push the Boundaries of your Work

Sometimes the hardest habits to break are the ones that have served us well. In order to move work forward, there's a bit of resistance involved; it can feel like boundaries, but there are ways to push through them. Here are 3 of my favorite ways.

For information on any future classes or learning opportunities:

Video Chapters:
0:00 Introduction
0:40 First way: Drastically upsize (or downsize) out of your comfort zone
4:42 Second way: Don't decide what you're painting until it's obvious
8:55 Third way: Grow your tolerance for unattractive outcomes and stretch it as far as you can
14:19 Why turning the canvas helps you do something new
20:00 Why it's worth it to practice that tolerance for making bad art (or outcomes we don't like)

What a beautiful piece! I really like the way you are working with collage and acrylic! Lovely!

You are so brave to share how painting is not always a "fun and easy" thing to do. Sometimes it's really hard to slog through the ugly teenage phase. But worth it in the end. Even if just for the learning. Thanks again for your honestly!

I resonate so much with what you said and did here. So far I have failed on all three points you raised, especially the tolerance of the unattractive outcome. This often keeps me from working altogether. It is very inspiring to watch you push through that stage and arrive at such a beautiful painting in the end. Thank you for this post!

In addition to being an amazing artist, you are a wonderfully instructive communicator...so easy to listen to and never boring! Thank you for sharing your beautiful work and knowledge.

Thank you for sharing you work, as well as your spirit. You are the Masterpiece. I’ve literally listened to this video three times in a row. This is exactly what I needed to support my meditation practice and personal development.

Very interesting boundaries! You have captured a mood more then a place! I love it

Working intuitively is how I always work and I never know where a piece is going until many layers. Even within a series I don’t know exactly what will come. I love your work.

I’m a 62 year young painter and am going through exactly the same process as you. It’s amazing to hear it said out loud. Going from being controlled and semi realistic to abstract does my head in. I still can’t help making things that look like something specific. I love the journey though and the outcome is good but… it’s interesting what comes out of me so I suppose this is my artistic voice at the moment. I have to fiddle lol. love your work by the way, I’m a new subscriber and it’s lovely to watch and listen to you.

Thank you for sharing. I now realise you need to push on and usually you will get there eventually.

Your work is so inspirational. I love that you start without knowing what you are creating and where you are going to finish. Your approach to art is a lot like living a happy and fulfilled life. Releasing the outcome and letting it become what is supposed to be is fabulous and the secret to authentic joy and happiness.

Wow! What a great thing to share! I know it means a lot to hear of your process. It’s
easy to long to know what you think on the journey to
creating!

Unbelievable ❤️ It's fascinating to watch the development of the most beautiful art. You have God given talent. I plan to do my third abstract tomorrow. Hopefully I will like it's final outcome

Thank you so much for showing the process. It is so helpful. I always struggle with Point 2 and 3! 😥 What a beautiful piece. A mysterious landscape. My first thought: Oh, that's Tolkien: Things that are, things that were, and some things that have not yet come to pass- Galadriel's mirror😀 I really love your Art and the creative process.

I really like your way of thinking and your works. They are very inspiring.
I love the whole process of this piece and the outcome. You really captured the mood of the landscape. It resembles so much with Turner's paintings.
