India & China are currently engaged in a tense military stand-off along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Ladakh region, and the possibility of a conflict cannot be ruled out.
India – China bilateral relationships are at an all-time low since the clash between the Indian Army and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in the Galwan Valley on 15th June 2020 that led to many losses of soldiers by both sides.
This episode & the on-going standoff is a bitter reminder of the Sino-Indian War fought between the two Asian giants in October 1962, when Chinese troops launched an invasion over the disputed territory in Ladakh & NEFA regions. In 1962, India was ill-prepared to fight a war with China, who our then government headed by Pt Jawaharlal Nehru considered as a friend.
Today, however, while India continues to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict, it now speaks from a position of strength. It has strong defences on the Himalayas with its military deployed on developed border infrastructure, with strategic relationships with other major powers that support India. The message is, that it’s not in China’s interest to attack India today. In this video, Maroof Raza, Indian Defence Analyst & Consulting Editor, Times Network explains why 2020 is not 1962!
