Summary, to get better at something:

- First, you must intensely focus on a task (this triggers the release of acetylcholine and noradrenaline in your brain) till exhaustion
- Then, you must shift into deep rest--either in the form of deep sleep or a relaxing activity (perhaps meditation?) where your brain is not under stress

You must do both in order to get better at something.

You ever been stuck on a game boss and just can't get past it, but then after sleeping on it you beat it the next try? It's like you absorb the timings into yourself after you sleep.

Fun fact: This is a process used in training dogs efficiently. The active training session requires imense focus from the dog and also should stress them (within reason) and immediately after a successful event to end the session they are confined to a kennel/crate with minimal stimulation in order to "process" what was learned.

This fits in very well with the pommodoro method of getting tasks done. I’ve never felt more productive than when I was following it.

It’s crazy because back in school when I was learning piano I’d spend a whole session trying to learn just a page of a song . Next day after sleep I’d get it after like the first try all the way through that’s when I realised my mind revises what I’ve learned in my sleep

Nowadays we need 10 scientists and 20 sucess coaches to tell us to sleep enough every night, something that our parents told us all the time where we were kids...

This also works very well for learning music.

Ray Dalio was once asked in an interview what is his most powerful tool (in his workday @ Bridgewater)- his quick answer: meditation.

This is that awesome feeling you get when you do something new. Like skateboarding or wakeboarding or playing the drums or shooting a bow or anything new. You sucked at it. Maybe you’re sore. But you can’t wait to get back out there. Then you get better.

When you learn how to code this becomes so obvious it's scary.

I used to take valeric acid and a chemical extracted from kava to increase k complexes and sleep spindles to boost memorization during sleep. It worked well.

Pure nicotine increases plasticity, chlorinated derivatives of nicotine in cigarettes does the opposite.

I gave up smoking, it was hard. While I was at work I wasn't bothered (same shit different day, I wasn't getting anything out of it creatively) but it was hardest when I was creating (painting, guitar or whatever) that's when it was hardest, because I felt like having a cigarette helped me learn(expanding my attention) whatever art I was doing that day. And now I know why. Great guest

I remember a couple months ago I tried to do a 180 kickflip on skateboard for like twin hours and was no where near landing it. The next day I landed cleanly on the second try!

I truly think this applies to dogs as well.
Trouble teaching them a new trick or skill? Show them what you expect, give them positive reinforcement not correction, and let them sleep on it. Works every time I swear

This is actually a technique called Poromodo technique. Maybe not sleeping but breaks in between deep focus so that the myelin sheaths can be built

I heard that meditation triggers in the brain some of the same mechanisms as sleep. Might have to try it out👀

From a man who’se suffered from insomnia due to drug abuse i know i need deep sleep, everything else ive changed but the docs dont take me seriously due to my history of drugs, i wanna become better but i literallt feel how i become dumber due to my lack of deep sleep.
Doing cold showers, breathing methods, exercise almost daily at gym, (not to intensive) feel a bit better but my sleep is just terrible if not worse

I’ve been learning to code, I’m 38 years old. I find the answers come to me in my sleep or when I play video games.
