- 00:04 🎯 Arguments are essential but should lead to positive outcomes, avoiding negativity that can lead to a communication "death spiral."
- 00:57 🌀 The concept of a "death spiral" is likened to a situation where communication breaks down to the point of no return, which is particularly serious in negotiation scenarios.
- 02:02 🐊 Speaker compares the normalcy of seeing dangerous creatures like alligators in the South to the desensitization New Yorkers have towards pigeons.
- 02:44 👨‍⚖️ Growing up in a family of attorneys provided early exposure to effective communication and the art of persuasion, especially in legal contexts.
- 04:16 🧠 Speaker learned the importance of listening and asking questions to guide others to their own conclusions, a skill honed by observing their father's communication style.
- 06:03 💡 Speaker became fascinated early on with how the phrasing of words can significantly impact communication, turning it into a sort of "game."
- 07:27 ⏳ The importance of the "every six seconds" rule in communication, which indicates how quickly attention can shift during conversations or storytelling.
- 09:28 🧩 Non-verbal cues and reactions during a trial are crucial, as they can heavily influence how jurors perceive the arguments and facts presented.
- 11:24 🎭 The courtroom is described as a kind of theater where human perception and instincts play a critical role, especially for jurors and court reporters.
- 12:42 📚 Speaker is working on a new book titled "The Next Conversation, " which is set to be released in March 2025 by the same team behind "Atomic Habits."

I'm a follower of both these gentlemen. Excellent interview and I'm pleasantly surprised to see them together. I look forward to reading Jefferson's book.

No BS.
I am a veteran who had a mental health crisis last week Thursday.
The VA prevention hotline man failed me.
As a result I ended up 3 blocks away at my local FD, with the terrible prevention rep still on the phone, seeking help from my community's finest.
They turned their back on me.
I went to the curb outside the firehouse, sat down and cried. I was now totally lost.
Then the police response...
All I can say if it was not for the training I had previously thru my employer in Chris Voss negotiation and de-escalation...I might not be here right now.
The VA is now taking proper care of me.
I was saved by my Lord in Heaven, however Mr. Voss was right there with me as well.
Thank you.
Christopher

Life lesson @ 6:25

"It's often not about what you say, it's how you say it."

You gotta learn how to read/know your audience. Reception is crucial when information is being exchanged. Teachers have it rough tbh.

I feel I need some coaching on this topic about communicating in a way that's not negative but getting the point across and defusing situations.

Maybe we can get him to Negotiate a stand down order on the FBI's political interference! A little compassion for what American citizens have been put through.

The amount of techniques developed in the communication that they are constructing is bizarre

My number 1 take away from this is that the justice system needs an overhaul to remove the incredibly biased, corruptible and emotionally controlled “random” jury system completely removed and replaced with analysis AI that weighs strength of evidence presented

Why does this conversation make me uncomfortable? I know it’s an interview and the interviewer needs to ask questions. The interviewed seemed to be trying to control the narrative rather than accepting it
