I like the concept of "tactical empathy" because it makes total sense to me. Its like "oh I know you are angry and I know why you are angry and maybe you have a good reason to be angry, but right now it's not very useful so let's try to calm down and work together to find a solution ". As long as it's not used in a manipulative way it seems like a nice skill to me .

Understanding where someone is coming from, 'empathy', thank you Chris Voss.

A strong sense of empathy can help predict behaviors and outcomes. It's basically a super power you can use to help others. When I worked as an executive assistant, my boss was always shocked by how I would get stuff done before he even asked. I would just joke with him that I'm psychic 😂 it was mostly just listening, figuring out what people like and remembering it. Also, if I was in their shoes, how would I feel in that moment and what would I need? It's pretty easy and didn't occur to me as something that needed to be taught but I guess there are people who might block their ability for whatever reasons.

His book about body language is an eye opening knowledge, we can learn a lot from him..

I'm not sure hearing about empathy from a hostage negotiator, who essentially excels in understanding and manipulating others, regardless of their criminal status is the best you could have done. I'd have rather heard about a prison's mental health councellor talk about it. Would have given similar background's information while not making the whole thing appear distopian.

Mirror and parent the emotions of the killer back to them in order to not be killed.

An FBI dude talking about empathy and empathizing, oh the irony

Emotions are the King of human life. Logic, "critical thinking"...a popular buzz-phrase these days... most people cannot name one single decision made with logic or critical thinking in the last year.

Interact with that... You mean use it against them? 😂

Not really "empathy" when you're looking to manipulate someone... fair enough in a hostage negotiator but not where most of us want our lessons on empathy.

Watch that wrinkle above His right eye going from right to the middle of the face and then down towards his left ...eye! If I was a criminal and see that face, I know I'm screwed😂

I think I might have been a good hostage negotiator.
When I was a street cop I talked lots of subjects into surrendering peacefully.
And then I followed up on any promises I made.
