Don Mclean asked Home Free to do this re-release with him because their singing impressed him. So the question is, "is Don Mclean a Home Fry?"

On a side note? It is really rare, to have TWO bass singers in a group like this, who can BOTH sing really well, above their low registers. A truly unique and awesome group. And again, Massive props to Don McClean, for putting this all together. What a brilliant version!

This song was number 1 in 1971. I remember when it came out, and as a young kid it absolutely blew my mind. It is still the longest #1 hit in history. And I can sing every word, as can just about everyone my age. It was transformational.

Don McLean originally relased this song in 1971 so this year is the 50th anniversary. (He also wrote it.) The "day the music died" refers to Feb 3, 1959, when Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the "Big Bopper" were killed in a plane crash. This video was released on Feb 3, the 62nd anniversary of the crash. The song has a lot of hidden meanings. From what I've read, Don wanted to do the remake with Home Free because he felt that they "understand harmonies".

Feb 3rd, when the video was released, was the anniversary of the plane crash "the day the music song was written 50 years ago by Don McLean. I wonder if they have oxygen on standby for Adam...8 solid minutes of beatboxing....they say he almost passed out....and that they may never not perform this song live..They all killed it in this, and Don McLean still has it at 75.

OMG this song is 50 years old!! I feel so old now. I was 12 when this song was released. On February 3, 1959, American rock and roll musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and "The Big Bopper" J. P. Richardson were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, together with pilot Roger Peterson. The event later became known as "The Day the Music Died", after singer-songwriter Don McLean referred to it as such in his 1971 song "American Pie". Schnell so awesome to have you back reacting.

...because no one does a cover with Don Mclean.. He's 75 years old now. just another reason to love Home Free.

This song was an anthem of my youth. One of the greatest songs ever recorded! It did my heart so good to see and hear the LEGENDARY Don McLean be a part of it as well. The man hasn't lost a beat!! RIP Buddy, Ritchie & J.P., truly one of the saddest days in rock history.

I love how Home Free makes this their own but keeps the song in tact. This is the best they've done and they deserve a Grammy.

McLean still has a beautiful tone to his vibrato 50 years later. I thought it was just a cover, then holy S^%t that's

I wonder how many people are going to give you hell for calling Chance, Tim. LOL just let it roll off.
I think the boys did a great job and it was very exciting to see them work with Don McLean.

I did not know this song until I heard Home Free featuring Don McLean sing it. I was born and raised in the land of Reggae, where the great Bob Marley and Shaggy is from. I live in New York now and found Home Free late 2018 and fell in love with A capella. They got me through quarantine. Thanks to them. American Pie is like a story and I love it. Home Free did an excellent job and made it so beautiful. I really love how they have collaborated with the legend and are raising the bar in A capella music. Schnell, you did an awesome reaction. Thank you

Loved your reaction. It’s ok to mess up the names. We call the 1st singer Chance instead of Adam to not confuse him with Adam Rupp, the beatboxer. Weren’t they great?! Don McLean sounded great for 75! He wrote and sang the song over 50 years ago. Home Free has another home run. Their harmonies and solos were great. To hear more of Chance try I Can’t Outrun You or Yours, both are tremendous. Yes, we’re used to Tim going low but he sings high in Mayday and the newer song Snow Globe. Showing off his 5 octave range. Hahaha. I agree with you that the song gives you a warm feeling even though it’s about sad events. I think because it’s been around for so long and so many of us know it. Keep reacting to Home Free!

I truly enjoyed how this this video was produced. I can only imagine how much Don McLean and Home Free had fun making this video together. I’m sure that it was an experience that they all will cherish the rest of their lives.

Listening to the depth of the story Don’s lyrics tell made me conclude that the song writers of the seventies were some of the best story tellers in the history of rock music. It’s an art form that we either don’t or rarely experience within the rock genre anymore.

I was glad you finally figured out your little slip with Chance. Chance has a number of solo performances. "I Can't Outrun you" is a good Chance video to review.

ha ha, I worked for over 60 years, including 15 yrs running my own biz. well...retired now but must say running my own biz was more rewarding :) This song pretty iconic because we lost 3 super entertainers and the music they would have written we'll never hear. A shame. Thx Schnell
