I took a counter offer and am still there 6 years later. My decision was purely financial.

I got a counter offer for a matched salary and title. At first I spoke with my direct manager and told him if they match salary and title I’ll stay cause I like the company and working with him. He got back to me and told they could only accept to increase the salary- not the title. After I gave my resignation letter, another pm knew abt me leaving, so him and two of other VP at the company talked with me and promised to fix the problems. I asked for a raise 6months ago, they raised my salary to 40% of the amount I asked in the counteroffer they’ve accepted to give me 100% of same amount I asked 6months ago and also changed my title. On the other side, the new company has a good reputation in my field and while negotiating my compensation with them, they also told me they are paying me higher than the normal salary for my job in the field. It’s such a hard decision to make. Any opinions?

Throughout my career I have changed employers every 5 to 6 years. In each of those times I have never accepted a counter offer. The reason is having seen others accept an offer to stay only for the employer to make their lives a living hell afterwards. Once the decision is made move on, move forward and don’t look back.

The trust is burnt as soon as you announce your resignation. It also relates to a person's decision-making and integrity. Resigning is a final decision imo

The reason why you were leaving won't be fixed with more money--- move on !!! Good Stuff Jennifer . Collateral damage will be brutal !

A counter-offer is often the employer's reaction to having been slapped on their face by your resignation. It is not there to make you (the employee) feel appreciated. It is there to extinguish the fire, avoid recruitment and onboarding cost, to give themselves (the employer) a lot of argument against you in case you accept it. Unless of course you decided to resign, knowing that they will raise your salary or promote you, and this was your ultimate goal. Your life won't get easier though.

No. I declined it because I need more than just a raise. I was looking for growth

Personally, this is why I tell people that a job is more than just money. When money is an issue, I rather ask for a raise. If that raise is denied, then I would look for other places to work. If I find a new place that offers more money, and my old job provides a counter offer it is like a relationship where someone is valuing me only when they notice that I am wanted by someone else. I think that everyone is better off with a fresh start, whether the issue was money, or not. Who is to say that my employer won't feel resentment having to pay me more for a job that the employer initially felt was worth less.

What would your advise be for this scenario: compensation at current employer is fair, atmosphere and everything about this position is great and going well. No reason to leave, am happy here. Now enter the headhunter who represents a hiring manager who really likes your background and though you weren't actively looking, has sweet talked you into interviewing for the role. The opportunity is different but similar with a lot of running room to grow, but the compensation is much higher. How would you handle the counter from the current company?

I got lowballed, the pressure was intense and the employers weren't straightforward i put in my resignation letter and they gave a counter offer which I declined

I've declined the counter offer as when I was begging for a raise all these years it always fell on deaf ears and now that I have another company valuing me more, they are ready to throw the same money at me. As you rightly said, money will temporarily just make you too excited to easy your actual issues, once it wears out, you will again look elsewhere for a job. Bob, the manager plays a crucial role, he represents the company to you, so he better handle you well !

The easiest way to say it would be "at the end of the day, the only thing that's changed was your paycheck" meaning the issues are still present at your current position.

First thing to address: If resigning, and you "burn trust" by making what is a normal business move, then your company isn't treating you fairly.
Work is a business transaction. A couple bad quarters, and the tables could flip, and you could be laid off, and you are expected to take it in stride.

If your reason for resigning is cultural or organizational, then no, don't accept a counter, obviously those things will not change any time soon.
If your reason for resigning is financial, as it was for me, accept the counter offer.

I just put in my resignation.. and now my manager is asking me if I'd like to work only weekends. 🙅‍♂️
I just declined politely saying, "Not at this time but thank you."

I think any c.offer will not help to keep the person if someone decided to quit, it it much too late.

Hi Jennifer, quick question, I'm planning on moving country, my boss said that he is checking if company can keep me, I have set a clear deadline of April, but knowing how company works I know these take lots of time and my boss leaves things for last minute, if I send notice and they make an offer with a position in my new living country is that ok for me to accept?

I am on the brink of leaving my job and luckily I know they won't give me a counter offer even if they did I wouldn't accept it because it wouldn't benefit me anyway and I have done everything I can in that position. I want to move on to something else
