I have received a counter offer every time I quit. Never accepted one. Every time I asked for a raise. They "didn't have enough money for a raise". Then when I got an offer, all of a sudden, they had the money and a new title...liars.

Plus it is a lot of fun rejecting a counteroffer

My dad always told me don't push to get promoted within your company, apply to new ones. You'll almost always get a better overall deal and the other thing is it's easier to take a more senior role in a new environment. People at your old company will have a hard time viewing you different than when you first started at the company.

I once got a job offer in another company, but got a good counter-offer from my employer. I notified my recruiter and he told me (in professional words) "if they valued you, you wouldn't need to quit to finaly get a salary raise", this made me realize he was totally right. I rejected the counter-offer, accepted the other job offer and it was the best decision ever. I'm very thankful with the recruiter because he might just have wanted to fill the position but he did guide me in my life.

There is a saying: “Let your yes be yes and let your no be no.” Once you’ve made a final decision, stick with it. Indecisiveness leads to misery.

It's like re-marrying someone that you divorced.

20 years ago I left a high paying high stress tech support job in the Boston Financial District for a far less paying mostly stress free job close to home. This was the best move I ever made because it allowed me to be with my kids I never missed a ball game I was there to help them with homework. Yeah I missed the $$$ but I gladly gave up material things to be a better parent for my kids.

One thing my friend did that I think was genius:

He went to a few interviews and did get an offer that he wasn't thrilled about. Then when he got a counter offer he accepted it with a fancy new title and a slight bump in pay. 2 months later he left them for a new company for the same title he previously didn't have experience in lmao

Counter-offers are quite insulting because it's the company's way of saying: "oh now you are leaving, we ask you to stay and this time we pay you what you should have had in the first place".

"The reasons you were looking for a new job are still there." So true.

Absolutely correct. Never "threaten" to leave. I speak from hard-learned experience. Once your employer knows that you're _willing_ to go somewhere else, they will immediately begin the process of replacing you. Accepting a counter offer only buys them more time.

Most Americans find it hard to retire comfortably amid economy downtrend. Some have close to nothing going into retirement, my question is, will you pay off mortgage as a near-retiree, or spread money for cashflow, to afford lifestyle after retirement?

If they really valued you, you probably wouldn’t be considering leaving.

All you've done if you accept a counteroffer is lose your chance to leave on your own terms so that they can fire you later on theirs.

"Don't appreciate me when I already have one foot out the door!"
Excellent video! More people need to understand this for corporates to stop taking things so for-granted!

I've accepted two counteroffers that worked out great. In each case I was leaving for personal reasons and my employers came up with creative ways to meet my personal requirements while allowing me to stay. These companies highly appreciated me and my work, and I was honored to receive their generous counteroffers. I have no regrets. As the saying goes, never say never.

When I turned in my 2 week notice, my soon to be former boss asked if I would stay if they could match whatever my new company was offering. That was hilarious because my reason for taking the new job was to escape the extremly toxic work environment of my current one; and in doing so I was actually taking a pay cut. I turned down the offer and have never regretted if for a moment.

Never threaten to leave. When it's time to leave, leave. Whether you give notice and how much notice you give depends on the position you are leaving. But this guy is absolutely correct. Once you turn in your notice, let that be carved in stone.

Interestingly, I was being paid way below the median salary for my job and was stuck in place for years. After my third consecutive raise that was lower than cost of living increases, I decided to test the market to see what my value was. I fully intended to use this as a negotiation tactic with my current employer.

To my surprise, I got a new job offer that was a 26% bump in salary. I accepted it immediately and put in my 2 weeks notice. 2 days later my old employer offered to match the salary. I was actually a little insulted by it. If they thought that was my value, then why was I so poorly paid in the first place? Even if they had me making 15% more than they were paying, I may have been content as that was close to the median.

Long story short, I saw no reason that they wouldn't continue being cheap and denying me fair raises and opportunities, so I left. I have been much happier since then.

You're absolutely right about "being selfish". Corporaton is going to be ok with or without you. Employees are all just replaceable at anytime regardless of positions or titles.
