When your calcium levels are low, your muscle contractions aren't controlled properly. I had a complete thyroidectomy, and I was released after 9 days in the hospital. Normally it's only a one or two night stay after the procedure, but my calcium dropped and had trouble getting back up and staying up without a drip. This video is from the day after my discharge - my levels are still low and my Chvostek was positive, but not as low as before. The Chvostek is tested by hitting a certain nerve on your face and it causes an irregular muscle spasm because of the muscle contractions being uncontrolled due to low calcium. Other symptoms of hypocalcaemia that I experienced : numbness (my legs and arms feel like they fall asleep really easily), cramps in my jaw for the first few bites of food, tingling in my fingertips.
The Trousseau sign is another test, where an arm pressure cuff is squeezed on the arm to 20 mmHg higher than the systolic rating on your blood pressure, and maintained for 3 minutes. The palm is kept face up, hand relaxed and open. If your calcium is low, your thumb draws in towards the palm of the hand and cramps up, the fingers will cramp too. This became positive for me during my stay at the hospital so they decided to give me the calcium drip. However, the day I was released, it had been negative twice. So this is a very telling test. The Chvostek must stay positive much longer! ;)
